Lillian Gish, along with her younger sister, Dorothy Gish, both grew up in Springfield, Ohio. From a young age, they both followed their mom in her footsteps of becoming an actress.
Lillian was born into a lower-class family, with a father who was absent, and a mother who got into acting to support her family. Once Lillian and her sister, Dorothy, were old enough they did the same.
