There are several attractions within easy reach: Bottarve museum - a historical look back to the 19th century with exhibitions, activities for children and a cozy café. At Vamlingbo church is Naturum Gotland, which has the task of informing and inspiring about Gotland's nature and natural history. In Vamlingbo Vicarage the artist Lars Jansson, a famus Swedish painter, has his exhibition. There is also a garden café and nursery with sales of plants etc.
Burgsvik is the nearest town with, among other things, an ica store, a library and a café. Here is the restaurant Grå Gåsen, which is known from the TV program so much better. On Saturdays, Burgsvik's market usually gathers many visitors. Burgsvik also has its own cinema, centrally located in an old barn. There is always a lot going on in the harbour. There is a very good swimming area with a shallow sandy beach as well as piers and jumping towers along the outside of the pier. There is also a wood-fired sea sauna here that is open a couple of evenings a week.
There is much to discover on the southern tip of Gotland. Right next to the Holmhällar guest house, there is an exciting rauk area that runs in an arc along the beach from Holm's fishing village to Svalpvik. The Rauk forms really invites climbing or imaginative interpretations of what they can imagine.
Sandy beaches can be found in many places, including at the harbor in Vändburg, at Holmhällar and Austre.
For those interested in art, there is also the place Körsbärsgården with art both inside and outside, and of course a café.
Don't miss the fantastic coastal road at Hoburgen and the Husrygg nature reserve!
Gotland is one of Sweden's best places for cycling. The island's unique nature makes the conditions optimal, regardless of the level and challenge you desire. Varied nature, few difficult uphills and with a sun that (almost) always shines means that a ride on the bike is always a wonderful experience on the island. There is everything from wide paved roads perfect for road racing to twisty and gravel roads and trails for mountain biking.
Good swimming is available in many places along the coast. The nearest sandy beach is at Stuckvik harbor on Faludden's south side. In Burgsvik's harbor there is both a shallow sandy beach, jetties and jumping tower as well as an ice cream kiosk.
More swimming is available, among other things, at the harbor in Vändburg, at Skvalpvik, Holmhällar and Austre.
It is also good to swim at rocky beaches and at shallow areas - bring swimming shoes. And watch out for currents in strong winds!
Gotland is Sweden's largest island, with characterful wilderness and a coastline with beautiful sandy beaches. Visby, the island's capital, is historically significant and dates from the Viking Age and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Everyone who has set foot on Gotland soil agrees that there is something magical about it. Gotland is a popular summer destination for both Swedes and guests from other countries. This unique island off Sweden's southeast coast has it all – nature, outstanding history and unique local flavors. Wander around the cobbled streets of Visby and it's as if you've been transported to the Middle Ages.
Visby's historic cityscape is strongly marked by the Ringwall, complete with towers and gates, which was built between 1250 and 1288 and stretches over 3.5 kilometers around the centuries-old town centre.
It's well worth a visit at any time of the year – each season has its own unique charm – but the island comes alive especially in the summer, when the temperature hovers around 20°C and the water is most suitable for swimming. Even if swimming is not on the agenda, Gotland's distinctive coastline has a lot to offer. The sea stacks - or 'raukar' as they are called in Swedish - found on the rocky east coast are an almost otherworldly sight to behold.
Gotland has fantastic scenery and as it is mostly flat, it is a cyclist's dream destination. The Ekstakusten is a popular cycling option with a lot to offer. This stretch of coast is located in an idyllic nature reserve and stretches across the western side of the island, from the fishing village of Djupvik to Hammarudden. Hop on a ferry to explore the neighboring islands of Stora Karlsö and Lilla Karlsö, known for their rich flora and fauna.
No trip to Gotland is complete without a visit to the island of Fårö. Located just northeast of the main island, you can reach this characterful destination with a free eight-minute boat trip from Fårösund. It is easy to understand why the world-famous Swedish director Ingmar Bergman fell in love with this island, where he spent a large part of his life from the 1960s until his death in 2007. Fårö is also home to the impressive rauks (limestone mounds), which form amazing natural sculpture fields along the edge of the sea.
