Pastel Nagomi Art (日本和谐粉彩) is a Japanese therapeutic art form founded in 2003 by Mr. Norikatsu Hosoya, the founder of the Japan Pastel Hope Art Association (JPHAA).
The word "Nagomi" (和) translates to harmony, calm, or peace in Japanese. The art form was created to bring emotional healing, reduce stress, and foster a sense of inner peace and hope through simple, accessible creation.
Fingers as Brushes: Instead of conventional paintbrushes, artists scrape soft pastels into powder and blend the pigments directly onto paper using their fingertips.
Soft & Gentle Aesthetics: The technique produces warm, gentle gradients, soft color transitions, and transparent tones.
Stencils & Erasers: Artists often use paper stencils, masking tape, and erasers to create clean borders, shapes, lights, and highlights against the blended background.
Standardized Canvas Size: Artwork is traditionally created on small, square paper (typically 15 cm × 15 cm), making projects quick to finish and approachable.
