Lilac Sykes is an emerging artist based in Toronto, Canada. Mainly taking an interest in Digital Art. Lilac uses their artwork to advocate for non-visible and visible disabilities. She recently graduated from the Visual and Digital Arts program at Humber Polytechnic. They have recently collaborated in the “Decagram” exhibition at Humber Galleries. Lilac is an active member of the greater Toronto area’s Art scene. Their commitment to their craft is shown through her frequent volunteering; they were an assistant in “The Lost Museum” exhibition, held in the Small Arms Inspection. She also was a volunteer art teacher at the Multicultural Women's Safe Centre and at the Glen Abbey Branch.
Lilac's portfolio consists of digital paintings, illustrations and graphic design works. Their pieces are based on Their childhood memories of nature. These memories developed her sense of imagination and colour. While they are working on a piece, it is important for them to work in colour. This is so each piece creates feelings of wonder and contentment. When she makes her pieces must be vibrant, by using lighter and darker shades of the colours she's working with. Instead of using blacks and whites, colour ensures her pieces are as engaging and stimulating as possible. Their pieces are intended for children and adults who have visible and non-visible disabilities. As she is an artist who identifies with non-visible disabilities, and as a creative who experiences this, it is important that her art will be accessible to everyone. For her pieces to be accessible, some of them incorporate sound, 3D printed components, or Braille. The purpose of her work is to add vibrancy to unsettling situations and environments. These environments could include hospitals, dentist's offices, principal’s offices, crowded areas or similar stressful environments. These kinds of environments can be scary places not only for children, but some adults too. Lilac feels that having access to their art in a scary setting would allow an individual to feel safe, uplifted and content. For her pieces of work, they wish to leave their viewers feeling safe, represented and uplifted.
"If Someone looks at my work and leaves with a smile I have done my job as a creative "
