Right on Time is the second album by the Los Angeles, California-based duo Brothers Johnson. Released in 1977, the album peaked at number two on the R&B albums chart and number thirteen on the pop albums chart in the U.S. It includes the number-one R&B song, Strawberry Letter 23, and winner of a Grammy Award in 1978 for Best R&B Instrumental Performance, "Q".

In a contemporary review for The Village Voice, music critic Robert Christgau gave the album a "C+" grade and panned the duo for how "bland" and lifeless they made their funk: "Pop professionalism reduced to a concept in which all annoyances and other signs of life are eliminated".[2] In a retrospective review, Allmusic's Stephen Cook gave it four-and-a-half out of five stars and credited Quincy Jones for producing a "seamless mix of pop and funk".[1]

"Blue Letter" is a song written by brothers Richard and Michael Curtis, first released by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac on their eponymous 1975 album, Fleetwood Mac. It was the only song on the album not written by a band member.[1] A remixed version of "Blue Letter" was included on the B-side of "Warm Ways".

The song was written by Shuggie Otis for his second album, Freedom Flight in 1971. Guitarist George Johnson, who was dating one of Otis's cousins, came across the track and played it for producer Quincy Jones. The group recorded a more funkier version for their 1977 album, Right On Time. Their rendition hit the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one on the Soul Singles chart in 1977.

At age 17, Otis wrote "Strawberry Letter 23" as way to describe his romantic feelings for his girlfriend. Though the lyrics commonly refer to "Strawberry Letter 22," Otis explains that, "the song is about a love letter. The guy and the girl had written each other 22 love letters. And the 23rd one he writes is a song."

The Avett Brothers released their ninth studio album titled True Sadness on June 24, 2016. It is their twelfth album overall, not including promotional EPs or live albums. The album was produced by Rick Rubin on his American Recordings label and reached #3 on the Billboard 200 during its first week of release.[1]

The album was made available on June 24, 2016 on CD, digital download and streaming with a vinyl release on August 5th, 2016. True Sadness contains 12 tracks, with an additional 2 exclusive tracks for Target customers.

On December 13, 2014 during the Legendary Giveback III concert in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina they announced they had spent the previous few week recording their new album, hinting that "Rejects in the Attic" and "Fisher Road" were recorded. In an interview published December 23, 2014 Bob Crawford suggested the album would come out "sometime in the first half of 2016."[6]

At the beginning of their 2015 tour, Bob mentioned they are recording the album will the full band live in studio, rather than piecemeal, the first time they've done so since Emotionalism.[8] [9] In an August 2015 interview with Cleveland.com Seth Avett revealed at they were "90% complete" with the new album.[10] In a September 2015 interview with MetroNews.ca Seth provided March 2016 as a tentative release month.[11] But in an early November interview, Bob Crawford mentioned it would be Spring or Summer 2016.[12] [13]

On March 14, 2016 in an open letter to Avett Brothers fans penned by Seth Avett the album's title, artwork and release date were publicly announced.[15] The same day, the first single "Ain't No Man" was announced but not released.[16]

An April 13 interview with Scott inside his art studio he revealed the cover art was designed by him and Crackerfarm.[17] On April 15, 2016 the album's tracklist was made available on iTunes and "Ain't No Man" was released for download or streaming. On May 6 the single version of the titular song "True Sadness" was released for download or streaming. On May 13 the official music video for "Ain't No Man" premiered on NPR.org.[18]

On May 26 the album's pre-order was made available on Target.com revealing two exclusive tracks[19] the official vinyl box set (containing a collection of items from various North Carolina businesses) was made available for pre-order[20] and the official studio version of "Divorce Separation Blues" was premiered on Huffington Post.[21] On June 9 the studio version of "Satan Pulls the Strings" was released and on June 14 the standard vinyl edition of the album was made available for purchase.

Although some members of the band were apprehensive to the experimentation, Seth and Scott followed Rubin's lead out of mutual trust.[24] The final album draws from each of those four variations of the songs.[25]

In their respective solo careers, all three members established themselves as figureheads to varying degrees. 9th Wonder became an in-demand, Grammy-winning producer, Jamla Records label owner, and university lecturer. Phonte began working in television while dropping two solo albums and earning his own Grammy nomination as the front man of soul outfit The Foreign Exchange. Big Pooh, ever the hustler, dropped several solo projects, toured, and picked up three up-and-coming artists to manage full-time.

The next steps were about catching up and reestablishing their brotherhood. After all, their lives had diverged on two distinct paths, with Phonte foraying into television and podcasting (he cohosts Questlove Supreme) while performing in another popular group, and with Big Pooh still toiling through a solo career, driving Uber for extra cash, and juggling managing duties for three up-and-coming artists: T. Smith, Blakk Soul (who has a feature on May the Lord Watch), and Charlotte-based rapper Lute, who also performs at Hopscotch this year.

But according to Phonte, 9th Wonder felt he should handle all the production duties on a Little Brother album called Homecoming. (The INDY reached out to 9th Wonder through his representation at Jamla Records for comment but received no replies.) Phonte says he was angry, and that he called 9th Wonder to offer an analogy about a father who leaves a family for years and then returns.

Phonte and Big Pooh say that while making this album, they spent more time together than they ever have in twenty years of knowing each other. Big Pooh would often drive up from where he lived in Charlotte and stay with Phonte in Raleigh for days at a time. They spent as much time hanging out and grabbing a bite as they did recording music.

On midnight Thursday night, the boy band released their first album in a decade, "Happiness Begins," and as expected, fans absolutely lost their minds. The album quickly became a top trending topic on Twitter following the band's abrupt split back in 2013.

Like their fans all three brothers -- Nick, Joe and Kevin -- each posted tweets to share their excitement for the album's release. Nick and Joe even shared baby-faced throwback videos.

"This was ten years ago almost to the day," Nick tweeted along with a clip of the band picking up their fourth studio album years ago. "Today my brothers and I have released our new album #happinessbegins thank you to everyone who stood by us every step of the way. We love you. This is for you."

The album includes the chart-topping singles "Sucker" and "Cool," but also emotional tracks like "Love Her" and "Hesitate," which Joe said is a "love better" to his wife Sophie Turner. And fans on Twitter couldn't handle it.

"This is an important song. I wrote it for my significant other, Sophie," Joe, 29, told Apple Music. "It's one of those love letters that you write to your partner saying, 'I'll be there no matter what.'"

Nick, 26, also has a song all about his leading lady Priyanka Chopra. Nick told Apple Music, the song, "I Believe," is a "love letter" to Chopra, with whom he married back in December. According to Joe, they even listened to the song during Nick's bachelor party.

Kevin's wife, Danielle Jonas, gets some love too on the album as well. The father of two, 31, spoke about the romantic, slow jam, "Love Her." "It's very important on an album for us to have some romantic songs," he said. "We've had a lot of vibey, upbeat songs that you listen to and by the eighth song, at this point in the dinner, you're finishing that bottle of wine. You had the main course."

"Strawberry Letter 23" is a song written by Shuggie Otis, although known most prominently by the version done by The Brothers Johnson. Otis wrote the song for a girlfriend who used strawberry-scented paper when she wrote letters to him. George Johnson of The Brothers Johnson was dating one of Otis' cousins when he came across Freedom Flight, Otis' 1972 album that featured the song.
