The origins of the Daschund is still in question but its been accepted for the most part that Germany was responsible for how daschunds look today. They body shape was key for their purpose to look for badgers in their dens. Daschund literally translates to Badger hound. Hunters would use the Daschund to sniff out the badger and its smaller stature let them get into the holes that badgers burrowed into.
It is important to make sure that you are not overfeeding your Wiener. They can be come over weight which in turn promote back issues. They have a long back which can be more prone to injury and being over weight can make that more prevalent. They do require exercise because they are a prey dog since they are from the hound group and it will help them to stay fit. It is also recommended to not them them jump off of anything to high to help keep them from injuring their back. This can be hard for puppies and young dogs. It would be best to pick them up and put them on the ground when they want off the bed of couch or you could get stairs and train them to use those instead of jumping. However puppies will be puppies.
They can be strong willed , stubborn, and independent dogs. This mean that sometimes training can be more trouble some. This will also just depend on the individual dog. They do react better to positive reinforcement with praise or treats then being punished. Again they are a hound in a small body so that nose can lead them astray and lead to distractions when it comes to training. They also can have a strong prey drive since they were originally breed to be badger dogs. This could mean that they might not do as well with small animals like kittens or rabbits.
