Airbenders learned airbending from the flying bison, In Avatar: The Last Airbender Appa is the last flying bison, the rest killed by the fire nation. which means that the flying bison are extinct, right? No, Aang found a subspecies of flying bison. After the war ended, Aang found a new lost herd of flying bison, he tamed them and drove them to the air temples. However they aren't exactly the same and have a few slight differences, first are their ears, Appa's ears are white while the new herd's ears are brown, next there fur color is a little different. The old bison have four stripes on their backs while the new bison have more stripes and thinner stripes.
Badgermoles are enormous in size and have brown fur with one white stripe between two black ones running down their backs and white, mask-like patches on their faces. They have long tails and five claws on each paw. Since Badgermoles are blind, they use their noses and sensitive whiskers to inspect objects in front of them. Badgermoles were the first to master earthbending and the original instructors from which humans first learned the art. The badgermoles first taught earthbending to Oma and Shu, helping them to create a maze of tunnels through the mountains dividing their two villages. Many centuries later, they were encountered by Toph Beifong in a cave after she ran away from home as a child. Given their shared blindness, they were able to understand each other and helped the young girl to develop her skill in the bending art. According to Toph, the badgermoles' earthbending was an extension of their senses and their way of interacting with the world, and she learned from them by copying their movements as they navigated the tunnels.
The dragon is the original practitioner of firebending, capable of breathing fire. The species demonstrated the true way of firebending to the Sun Warriors' civilization, a precursor to the modern day Fire Nation and to Wan, the first Avatar. As such, dragons are highly respected by both the Sun Warriors and the Fire Nation.
"Sozin started the tradition of hunting dragons for glory. They were the ultimate firebenders. And if you could conquer one, your firebending talents would become legendary and you'd earn the honorary title, Dragon. The last great dragon was conquered long before I was born, by my uncle."
— Zuko to Aang
The lion turtle, honorably referred to as Ancient One by the spirits, is the largest known animal in the world. In the era of Raava, lion turtles populated the Spirit Wilds, where they served as protectors of mankind by housing human cities on their backs. As indicated by the symbols on their foreheads, each individual lion turtle showed an affinity for one of the four elements and possessed the ability to grant individuals the power to control said element through energybending. When the era of the Avatar began, the lion turtles relinquished their roles as protectors of mankind and started to roam the world. However, by 100 AG, the lion turtles had been hunted to near extinction save for one individual.
Aang’s meeting with the sagely Lion Turtle is the spiritual climax of Aang’s search for world peace. Prior to their meeting, Aang consulted his friends and his past lives on how to peacefully end the war being waged by the Fire Nation. Everybody (including Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and even Yangchen) tells Aang that he must abandon his morals and kill the Fire Lord. This restraint is seen as a weakness among his friends and even his past lives, but the Lion Turtle shows Aang that it is his destiny to seek the peaceful solution.
The winged lemur is a small, energetic animal that is critically endangered. Momo is the only known survivor of winged lemurs that survived the Air Nomad Genocide, though the ring-tailed winged lemur, a closely related species, was discovered after the end of the Hundred Year War.
The turtle duck is a creature that lives in ponds throughout the world. It has an inclination for the warm weather of the Fire Nation but can also be found in the Earth Kingdom, as well as Avatar Korra Park in Republic City. At least two kinds of turtle ducks are known, with one group lacking wings while the other has them. In ancient times, the large turtle duck pond added to the Fire Nation Royal Palace became one of the structure's most widely known features. By the time of Avatar Kyoshi, many Earth Kingdom nobles had constructed their own mansions in likeness of the Fire Nation Royal Palace, including a turtle duck pond.
The badgerfrog is a furry, hopping animal that is indigenous to the western Fire Nation. Zuko used a badgerfrog as a practice audence when attempting to prepare an introduction to Team Avatar while at the Western Air Temple. It croaked in response to Zuko's remarks, and though hopped away, remained near his campsite. There were a number of badgerfrogs living all around the air temple, and Zuko used them on at least one occasion as a timer for Avatar Aang to practice his firebending forms.
