Welcome to the homepage of Li-Hsin Ning!
I received my Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I formerly worked at Google as a Speech Data Evaluator. I am currently a Full Professor in the Department of English (linguistics track) at National Taiwan Normal University. I specialize in phonetics, psycholinguistics, statistics, and programming. My research falls into two major categories: (1) acoustic phonetics and (2) articulatory phonetics. For acoustic phonetics, I investigate the internal models for tone in native speakers of Mandarin and second language learners of Mandarin. I used the pitch-shift paradigm to examine the reflex-like pitch-shift responses represented by point estimation and F0 contours. For articulatory phonetics, my research focuses on tongue movement (using structural magnetic resonance imaging), vocal fold vibration (using Electroglottograph), and aerodynamics (using Aeroview). I am additionally interested in speech technology (such as speech recognition) and sentence processing (both at the behavioral level and the neurophysiological level).
I have been the recipient of numerous awards including the Linguistic Society of Taiwan (LST) MA Thesis Award (2008), Fulbright Fellowship for Pursuing a Doctoral Degree in the US (2009-2011), Cognitive Science/Artificial Intelligence Award (2012, offered by Beckman Institute at UIUC), Dissertation Completion Fellowship (2013, offered by School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at UIUC), and Ta-You Wu Memorial Award (2024, offered by National Science and Technology Council).
