In my work I try to “deconstruct” objects such as buildings, the urban landscape, historical monuments, industrial structures, natural landscapes and organic objects with layers and layers of paper. I want to present a new way of seeing by manipulating single sheets of paper into sculptures by first breaking down a three-dimensional world into layers. I then “reconstruct” my subject matter by using layers. It is both additive and subtractive. The result are works that are all about light and shadow, texture and detail. I hand manipulate the paper, nothing is digital, as I value the handmade process of art. I typically use paper, glue, and an X-acto knife. I cut, fold, bend, score, carve and texturize the paper into sculptures. Recently I have been interested in highly engineered man-made structures, such as oil refineries, steel mills, oil platforms, complex bridges, construction cranes. What is the relationship of these structures to the natural landscape? What is the impact? How is it affecting our planet and can we change the narrative to be a positive thing?
