Overview

Dr. José Rizal was a Filipino nationalist, writer, and reformist who played a key role in the movement for peaceful change during the Spanish colonial period. Born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, Rizal was a brilliant scholar and polymath, fluent in multiple languages and skilled in various disciplines such as medicine, literature, and the arts. His most famous works, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, exposed the injustices of Spanish rule and awakened a sense of national identity among Filipinos. Though he advocated for reform rather than revolution, his execution on December 30, 1896, for alleged involvement in the Philippine Revolution turned him into a martyr and a symbol of the Filipino people's struggle for independence. Today, he is honored as the national hero of the Philippines. As the generation of today, we can honor our hero in many ways.
