We want the library youth to enjoy using social media! We hope to show them there are many useful ways to use the Internet. But we also need to make sure kids are safe. Here are a few handy tips for your library kid or even you!
*This is not an extensive list and guardians should be encouraged to promote internet safety and open communication with kids.
Never share your password with anyone
Never give out identifying information such as your name, home address, school name, or telephone number
Never download or install software without parental permission
Screen Name. When creating your screen name, do not include personal information like your last name or date of birth.
Bullying. Don’t send or respond to mean or insulting messages. Tell your parents if you receive one. If something happens online that makes you feel uncomfortable, talk to your parents or to a teacher at school.
Never agree to get together in person with anyone met online without parental approval and/or supervision.
Always tell a parent or other trusted adult about any communication or conversation that was scary or hurtful.
