Library terminology varies across all types of libraries.
In Seneca Libraries, we use the terms found in the infographic (left), to describe what we mean when we talk about shelving.
A quick review of call numbers, as they relate to shelving.
P is the class that covers the books related language and literature.
Then you have Subclasses: PA, PB, PZ
In order of the Subclass: they all numerated; PA 1-8595
That is how they have to be presented on the shelves.
If the Subclass has a more detailed subject description, it goes after the decimal, so this item is still shelved before the greater number.
For example: PA7, PA7.89, PA8, PA10, PA70, PA708
When you are asked to shelf read, you will have access to a shared campus-specific document, to track shelf reading progress.
