Our History

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office can trace its roots back to 1859 when the first Sheriff, Barney Loftus was elected town Sheriff. Sheriff Loftus was known as "Graveyard" for his wild west methods of keeping the peace. Sheriff Loftus was responsible for the capture of an estimated 80+ criminals that were sentenced to hang on High Rock, this was back when parts of high rock were occupied by the Choctaw Native Tribe. This and the numerous tales of shootouts is what earned him the nickname, "Graveyard." Over the years our department evolved from a horseback posse to an organized group of paid patrolmen with the purchase of several patrol cars In the late 1920s. The first patrol car was a Balsom Green Model A Ford making Tan the unofficial official color of the department from the beginning.
