Molbu is an Asymptite mythological figure described by Saint Titan the Witness in his sacred tome Apex King. Molbu is described as an enormous wolf with incredible strength, dark fur, and great intelligence. Molbu is said to reside in The Caps, the frozen lowlands that make up most of the square mileage of Fréas, atop Mount Molbu which is named after the creature.
According to Saint Titan the Witness, the first Arbiter and the Asymptite creator Ouranos, a wise and powerful being, blanketed the skies of Fréas with his cosmic radiance. The radiance (radiation it has been called by humans) formed cells within the bodies of the animals native to Fréas, which grew into tumors, which grew into Asymptites. Molbu, a crafty and swift individual, fled from the blanket and hid away from it, not receiving the intended blessing of Ouranos.
“I say no, O’ Great Arbiter! I say no to your powers! I shall be alone in this cave and only leave when you are gone!” Molbu declared from his den. As punishment, Ouranos raised Molbu’s cave high into the sky so he could never leave. Molbu lost his ability to reason, to speak, and forgot what brought about his curse in the first place. Mount Molbu, a 300 meter tall pillar with steep walls, remains as a permanent reminder of Ouranous’ power and Molbu became known as King of The Mountains.
Molbu became a central figure in Asymptite mythology, representing unfaithfulness, isolation, and pride, but also the power of nature and independence. Although Fréas remained a divided nation of small holds for many centuries, Saint Titan’s Apex King claimed that Molbu will accept any challenger to take the title of King from him, and that if an individual were to finish Ouranous’ punishment by scaling Mount Molbu and slaying the beast, they would become the lord over all of Fréas.
Despite this scripture being considered prophetic in Asymptite culture, no one even attempted to take on Molbu until the near end of the 6th Age, when Helder Mistcaller succeeded in finding and killing Molbu, bringing the head of the beast before an audience to proclaim his crown and united the people to form the new nation of Apex Fréas. When the Solstice War began, Helder’s armor was fashioned to mimic the wolf-like features of Molbu, giving Helder the feared title of Apex Predator by his enemies. Although Helder never told any living soul the exact details of his encounter with Molbu, the mythological wolf actually spoke to Helder a single word before the finishing blow, “Maliginant.”
