The enkidu was a species of parthropod from the territories of Collea and parts of Kaybi. The largest species of parthropod on Eranosia, the enkidu measured around 8 to 9 meters (26 to 30 feet) long and weighing up to 6 to 10 tonnes. These animals had bull-like tails, hulking bodies, strong legs, large mandibular pincers, and ten forward-facing compound eyes arranged in paired clusters. They were also covered in shaggy, black fur that sprouted from their back and draped over their sides.
In the wild, enkidu are highly aggressive and protective of their herds, which can number in the hundreds. Dominant bull enkidu, identifiable by the bright crimson head crest that extends to the shoulders, will patrol on the outside of the herd as they migrate and guard the females and young while they feed. Enkidu eat planet matter but especially wood and shrubs, capable of eating entire trees during grazing periods. Their mouth incisors are used like axes to fell larger trees and let other members of the herd consume it easier. While this can lead to entire shrublands being uprooted and removed, enkidu have an incredibly slow metabolism as their enormous digestive chambers slowly ferment woody material into usable nutrients. This, combined with their dung being also highly fertile, meant the enkidu propagated environmental community regrowth as they migrated and fed. Modern migration corridors were constructed to divert herds around major settlements whenever possible to avoid railway obstruction, farmland destruction, and logging settlement consumption.
Male enkidu are highly sought after by ranchers and herdsmen for their highly protective temperament. Complete domestication has never been achieved, but selective imprinting has produced exceptional guard animals. Legally accrued enkidu eggs are expensive and rare, but in order for an enkidu to become protective of a livestock group, they must hatch within an existing herd and be exposed continuously to adopted family members. Since enkidu are highly social and have a unique diet, they are able to become accepted into almost any species’ family without disrupting their behaviors.
