Lia Hemerik is a theoretical biologist. She got her double degree – PhD in biology and Msc in mathematics - from Leiden University in the Netherlands. During her career she has been using all kind of mathematical and statistical models in the life sciences for answering applied questions. The topics covered by her research range from biological control, threatened species, regime shifts to food web ecology. In her spare time Lia tries to keep in shape by doing fitness and yoga. She loves to knit and crochet, and to communicate her knowledge about nature and environment during nature walks. Her selection for Homeward Bound came as a surprise, although she already tries to make decisions that are good for the environment since 1977.
