Halloweeny

"Trick-or-treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat!" Sally, David, WendySue, Jack, Larry, Louise, Abbie, Jean, Dawn, Betty, Frank, Dan, Arlene, Anne, PJ, Ken and myself (Jen) were all present for this night's Halloweeny uke jam.

). BIG ROCK CANDY MOUNTAIN - Ken teased us while stretching out the ending.

). CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST (PJ) - This song brought back memories for everyone of the 1945 animated cartoon. We played it twice!

). BAD MOON RISING, Creedence Clearwater Revival (PJ) - Don't forget there's "a bathroom on the right."

). SPOOKY, Dusty Springfield (ARLENE) - Easy four chord song that says, "love is kinda crazy with a spooky little boy like you."

). FRANKENSTEIN (ARLENE) - This was a really cute parody on "Clementine". Instead of "Oh my darling", it's "Oh my monster" and so forth.

). HAS ANYONE SEEN MY GHOUL? (ARLENE) - Another parody on "Five Foot Two" with really funny lyrics that Ken was analyzing: "She's undead, so keep your head, avoid her if she hasn't fed."

). GHOSTBUSTERS (ARLENE) - Nice try, but it was really too hard for us to play.

). SPIRIT IN THE SKY (ARLENE) - The timing on this one was tough. Nice song about death and dying and preparing oneself to go to "the place that's best."

). PURPLE PEOPLE EATER (BETTY) - This song was released in 1958 around the time of Sputnik going into space. It's about an alien coming to Earth and wanting to be in a rock-n-roll band and eat purple people.

). MONSTER MASH (DEBORAH) - We got a peak at the Austin Uke Club playing this song and it seemed like everyone was smiling and having a grand old time. Dan led us off and it was a graveyard smash!

). LOLLIPOP, The Chordettes (PJ) - Reminds me of the movie "Stand By Me" which took place in the 50's. Everyone was plucking their cheeks with their fingers making the signature lollipop sound.

). CANDYMAN (PJ) - Another song played on the player piano at the Reedy household. I always liked the part that says, "you can even eat the dishes!"

). IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND, Gordon Lightfoot (JEAN) - Nice pick, Jean! Pretty song that has "ghost" in the lyrics.

). THE CAT CAME BACK (WENDYSUE) - Fizzed out. Not everyone knew this children's tune.

). SUGAR SUGAR (WENDYSUE) - Perfect pick, WendySue!

). PAINT IT BLACK, ROLLING STONES (WENDYSUE) - Dan was loving this song. Will we ever have Rolling Stones night?

). DEVIL IN THE DEEP BLUE SEA (ME) - Yes, sorry guys, this was a hard one to play. I can't play it either, but I love when Ken does. Great song to practice.

). GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY (JEAN) - Vaughn Monroe made this song famous and it was the song for a 50's cowboy show. Johnny Cash sang this as well as Burl Ives. This song was the prelude to the shennanigans that took place in the next song...

). GHOST CHICKENS IN THE SKY (KEN) - Everyone was going crazy bokking like chickens and laughing our butts off during this parody of Ghost Riders in the Sky. It goes on the list! Bok Bok Baaaak!

). DEVIL WITH THE BLUE DRESS ON, Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels (ANNE) - Upbeat, fun song to play! Nice pick, Anne!

). WITCH DOCTOR, Alvin and the Chipmunks (WENDYSUE) - Sally makes her young patients sing this song if they're in pain. Singing "Ooh eeh ooh aah aah Ting tang wallawalla bingbang" makes everyone feel good.

). THE ADDAM'S FAMILY THEME (WENDYSUE) - Short, sweet, a treat!

). THE MUNSTERS THEME (WENDYSUE) - Never knew there were lyrics to this song. I only knew the melody.

). TIME WARP (LOUISE) - Dan sang this for us. Great fun!

). EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE, The Police (LOUISE) - Creepy stalker song.

). ABRACADABRA, Steve Miller Band (LOUISE) - Great pick! Perfect ending to the night.

Ok, during our jams we're always talking about whether a song we've played should go on "The List" or not. Now, the list was always imaginary until Arlene took it upon herself and spent two whole days creating a real list. This list is based on songs that we played well and sounded really good at our club jams. Some of the songs need some practice, but still sounded great. This is an invaluable resource for our club and we are indebted to Arlene for putting it together for us. Thanks, Arlene! Our next theme on November 8th is songs from "The List". It should be a fun jam.

Looking forward to seeing you all in two weeks!

Cheers,

-- Jen.
