'60s Decade Jam Part III

On this first day of February, there was the usual group who got together to sing and play part 3 of our 1960's jam excluding Elvis and The Beatles. Arlene, Sally, David, Larry, Bill, Jack, Leah, Dan, Betty, Frank, Anne, PJ, Dawn, me (Jen) and Ken were present.

1). SIDE BY SIDE

Our opening theme and we still haven't decided on a proper ending. That darn [C9]!

2). ALLEY OOP, 1960 (Arlene)

This was a cute song about a caveman, "the toughest man there is alive." Never heard it before, but it was covered and released in 1965 by The Beach Boys.

3). SHERRY, The Four Seasons, 1962, (Arlene)

Frankie Valli is a legend. Ken tried to hit the high notes, not to shabby.

4). LIGHT MY FIRE, The Doors, 1967 (Arlene)

We need an organ. Intro and outro with Dan's kazoo worked well.

5). NOW THAT I FOUND YOU, The Foundations, 1967 (Arlene)

Repeated chorus 3 times. Nice work!

6). I COUNT THE TEARS, The Drifters, 1960, (Dan)

"Na na na na na na late at night." Dan sang this really well.

7). CUPID, Sam Cooke, 1961 (Bill)

Classic. Loved this song. This would be a great one to sing again for our next jam!

8). NEVER MY LOVE, Associations, 1967 (Dan)

What a gorgeous song! I love those signature five notes of the beginning and the melody is fantastic. Sounds great with a kazoo too!

9). TIME OF THE SEASON, Zombies, 1969 (Dan)

Great melody and captures the sixties generation perfectly. It's the time of the season for loving.

10). BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY, Four Seasons, 1962 (PJ)

Frankie Valli once again makes an appearance in this jam.

11). WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE, Peter, Paul & Mary, 1962 (Bill)

Great chord sheet. I thought this was the best one of the night. Beautiful protest song.

12). DRAFT DODGER RAG, Phil Ochs, 1965 (Bill)

Bill told us this song was sung at the 1968 Democratic Convention. Some might argue that Trump was a draft dodger.

13). SOUND OF SILENCE, Simon & Garfunkel, 1964 (Leah)

Great song to finger pick to using 2,4,3,4. Very pretty song.

14). ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT, E. Aaron Presley, 1969 (Anne)

We had a special treat from Dan who prepared and delivered Elvis' monologue at the end of this song. Anne was fined for this one and then congratulated for standing up to Ken.

15). WALK AWAY RENEE, The Left Banke, 1966 (Ken)

Nice chord progression! Must practice the flute for this one.

16). DEEP PURPLE, Nino Tempo & April Stevens, 1962 (Arlene)

This one's not to be confused with the group "Deep Purple". Supposedly this song could be used in the 30's, 40's and 60's. Nice job, Arlene & Bill!

17). IT'S IN HIS KISS (The Shoop Shoop Song), Betty Everett, 1964 (Bill)

I was Cher-Oy vey! We must try this again with a different Cher. :)

18). SATISFACTION, Rolling Stones, 1965 (Jack)

Good one!

19). CALIFORNIA DREAMING, Mamas and the Papas, 1966 (Jack)

We played it slow, but it was too hard to follow.

20). I GOT YOU BABE, Sonny & Cher, 1965 (Jack)

This was too hard for us. Girls were in italics and boys were regular font. Disaster.

21). BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS, Johnny Horton, (Jack)

Too many verses to this song.

22). ONLY THE LONELY, Roy Orbison, 1961 (Jack)

Roy Orbison's voice is so smooth and lovely, but this didn't turn out so well for us as a group.

23). HAPPY TOGETHER, The Turtles, 1960, (Jen)

Great job! Dan thought this was the best song of the night.

24). I'M A BELIEVER, The Monkees, 1966 (Leah)

Leah mentioned that she once figure skated to this song. Too bad she missed our Animals jam where we played lots of Monkee's tunes.

25). RAG DOLL, The Four Seasons, 1964 (Jack)

Frankie Valli is unforgettable. "Such a pretty face, should be dressed in lace." Love it. Can't get it out of my head.

26). WISHIN' AND HOPIN', Dusty Springfield, 1964 (Dan)

Nice way to end the night!

Next Jam Session is February, 15 2019, the day after Valentine's Day, and our winning theme is Love Songs. So long sixties!

Cheers,

-- Jen.
