Days of the Week

I (Arlene) was responsible for the theme for this night, Days of the Week, but we also allowed anything that had the word week or day in the lyrics or title. I really thought there would be a lot of great material. As it turned out, not so much, but we had fun with what we did find.

Quite a good crowd of 17 on this night. Besides myself we had Ken, Jen, Dan, Bonnie, Vin, Marianne, first time visitor Louise, Sam (arrived chewing gum just hours after his braces were removed!), Scott, WendySue, Ann and Suzan, We also had guests of Ken, his brother Bill, sister-in-law Margaret and niece Siobhan.

Bill and Sam played their bass guitars which added a nice layer of sound to our ukes. Bonnie and I brought our new foot tambourines for another bit of fun.

First up was ANOTHER SATURDAY NIGHT suggested by Suzan but her chord sheet had issues and was rescued by Scott. We have done this one a few times in the past as it has fit into multiple other themes. While it was a big hit for Sam Cook, it's been covered by many artists through the years including Cat Stevens and Jimmy Buffet. A good effort and we sounded great.

WendySue gave us COME SATURDAY MORNING published in 1970 covered by many over the years including Liza Minnelli, The Sandpipers, and Tony Bennett. It's never a good sign to see Ken struggle and we threw in the towel half way through.

WendySue put us in a down mood with The Carpenters' RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS and lifted us up with The Beatles' EIGHT DAYS A WEEK. Both sounded nice.

My only contribution this week was the Stones' RUBY TUESDAY. Son of a gun! My theme and I only submit one song? To my defense we went through the ordeal of ripping out carpeting and having a new wood floor installed this week. Five days of my home being a mess and invaded by a parade of workmen. I had other songs picked out but forgot to list them: Bay City Rollers' SATURDAY NIGHT, ANOTHER PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY written by Carol King and performed by The Monkees, and Buddy Holly's THAT'LL BE THE DAY. Sorry.

Next we played Ken's SUNDAY GIRL a 70's Blondie hit.

Jen gave us MANIC MONDAY by The Bangles. Always amazed and pleased when we end together and for this one we did. BTW: Ken worked up and published this chord sheet using the name Ukenken. Clever name, right?

Onto HAPPY DAYS from Suzan. One we've done a few times in the past. I prefer this chord sheet from our One Hit Wonders night this past August.

Vin gave us GOOD DAY SUNSHINE which is one of those Beatles song I never get tired of hearing. The strum pattern was a bit awkward and it kind of fell apart.

Dan loves the Moody Blues' TUESDAY AFTERNOON and I think Vin encouraged us to play it. Another difficult one for some of us. I wasn't sure of how to strum. In the end, Ken and Dan were pleased with it.

Scott and Sam sent in FRIDAY ON MY MIND. I do not know this one and if I recall, Dan was the only one singing. And several of us could not play.

Next we did FRIDAY I'M IN LOVE from Dan then LADY MADONNA I think from Scott.

We did a very nice rendition of NEVER ON SUNDAY from WendySue. She also gave us Monday Monday which was a bit of a challenge and with a quick change of pace, easy-peasy DA DO RON RON.

Since we ran out of songs Scott suggested CALIFORNIA DREAMING and still with extra time, we added A HARD DAY'S NIGHT.

Our next theme (Short session 7:30 to 9 downstairs in room A) is music from anyone named NEIL except Neil Diamond.

Until next time: You Keep Strumming,
