House Music

The gathering was a little thin tonight: Me, Bonnie. Suzan, Jen, Ken, Tim, Janet (welcome back), Vin, Wendy Sue and finally, after an absence of several weeks because of drama club commitments, Sam and Scott returned. Dan was missing because his FIL had passed earlier in the day. Sorry for your loss Dan and family.

Tonight the theme focused on parts of a house and poor Ken thought his clever attempt to reference 'house music', as in clubs, was lost on all. Not really but we sort of didn't respond to it. Sorry. At least I know I got it Ken.

1. We started out with a nice round of House of the Rising Sun which was Bonnie's idea.

2. Next Bonnie brought is Take Me Home Country Roads. Easy Peasy and we played it nicely as well. Some nice harmonizing too.

3. Singing In the Bathtub was next. Charles suggested it 2 weeks ago and it's a silly one I've always enjoyed so I submitted the chord sheet. Most of the gang were not familiar with this which I sang out to the best of my ability. Bonnie said she liked it. OK, so that was 2 of us at least. Good for a giggle.

4. Next up was Silhouettes (me) which we transposed to C, Am, F and G. Easy and fun.

5. Grandma's Feather Bed (me) was next. Easy and sounded good.

6. We took a stab at Don't Let The Rain Come Down (Bill) but we really weren't familiar enough with the tune. Maybe if Bill was there...

7. Suzan didn't realize we had a theme so she brought handouts for Mr. Bojangles. We faltered through 1/2 of it before giving up.

8. The Hawaiian version of Take Me Home Country Roads (Suzan) by Israel kamakawiwo' Ole had some interesting lyrics.

9. Next we did a Beatles medley of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window (Dan), Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight (Ken). The singing was thin through the Golden Slumbers sections but we picked up nicely for the Carry That Weight portions. What the heck, it's always fun doing a Beatles song.

10. We tried Up On the Roof (Bill) and again no one really knew it well and there seemed to be some issues with the chords. We abandoned any further efforts early on.

11. When I saw Home On the Range (Bonnie) I groaned because I don't really care for it BUT it was a nice easy standard and we did well.

12. We played Ringo's No No Song just before Wendy Sue arrived and since it was her idea (and I liked it) we did it a second time although Ken proceeded under protest.

13. Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey (Vin) was short and sweet.

14. Dan gave us Light My Fire. Nice one. sorry you missed it Dan.

15. Lookin' Out My Back Door came from Ken who did a tutorial about the strum pattern. Key changes, Chucking: it sounded nice and fun to do.

16. Jen handed out Hard Times Come Again No More, a real oldie by Steven Foster. No one knew it except for Ken and Jen but it has a simple melody which we all seemed to pick up quickly. It was pretty.

17. I handed out Show Me the Way to Go Home. As I recall, I was the only one who knew it well.

18. Knock Three Times (from Ken)

19. I Shot the Sheriff from Sam.

20. We ended by playing the Israel version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow suggested by Jen.

Next encounter will be devoted to TRANSPORTATION. What a broad range of material that should give us. Until then, you keep playing (Bonnie - recognize who I just copied?).
