Young people are a vital source of support for many terrorist groups, with roles ranging from cooks to armed fighters. But the ways young people are recruited vary widely across contexts. Others join terrorist groups voluntarily owing to the appeal of a group-based identity; perceptions of exclusion, grievances, or cultural threats; the promise of economic stability; prospects of fame, glory, or respect; and personal connections, including family and friendship networks. Within the DISEC committee, the International Community must reach to a peaceful consensus to safeguard vulnerable communities and to prevent the demographical expansion of these threatening groups.
Mining can impact local communities both positively and negatively. While positive impacts such as employment and community development projects are important, they do not off-set the potential negative, nevertheless it has been found that mining can negatively affect people by forcing them from their homes and land, or even contaminating local communities with secondary effects. Studies indicate that mining is one of the most perilous occupation in the world in terms of injuries and fatalities, and also due to the long term health effects associated with it. Within the SOCHUM Committee, delegates must be committed to seek ways for these communities to be safe and avoid contaminating their environment.
Venezuela has been in the midst of a severe political and economic crisis for several years, which worsened significantly after the spring 2018 national election. Lately, Maduro has denied that there is a humanitarian crisis in the country and had blamed sanctions from other countries for the existing problems. Aid, including food and medicine, is being stockpiled in Brazil and Colombia, but Maduro’s forces are not allowing it to reach to Venezuelan citizens, causing a large-scale conflict between civilians and the government throughout the last months. Within the SPECPOL Committee, delegates must find diplomatic paths towards the eradication of the crisis, considering the territory, corruption, and many other key factors.
Si luchas, vives; si pierdes, mueres - Eren Jaeger
The Third Party Actors of LHSMUN 2020 will introduce a diverse set of perspectives to every committee room at conference. This year, TPA delegates will represent several newspapers as part of a Press Corps and impact the course of debate through articles, social media posts and other creative projects. The TPAs Committee will be conformed by Press Corps and Non-Governmental Organizations, two separate bodies with differentiated challenges to deal with. As delegates of TPAs, your duty within and outside committee will be important to ensure that discussions going on across the conference are documented, and that they have a direct repercussion on the debate.
