The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 10, through its LGMED iSHARE session, held an insightful discussion on "Volleyball: The Game of Precision, Power, and Teamwork" on March 13-14, 2025. Led by Princess Airah Artajo, the session focused on fostering physical fitness, teamwork, and strategic thinking through the sport of volleyball.
The session provided a comprehensive overview of volleyball, starting from its history, rules, basic techniques, and strategic formations, to its physical and mental health benefits. Participants gained insights into how volleyball, a sport invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, has evolved into a global phenomenon played both indoors and on beaches, with its official Olympic debut in 1964 and beach volleyball following in 1996.
Fundamentals of Volleyball
The discussion covered key aspects of the game, including:
Team Composition – Understanding the roles of setters, spikers, liberos, and blockers in different formations such as 4-2, 5-1, and 6-2.
Basic Rules – The importance of three-touch limitations, scoring system, and set-winning requirements.
Essential Techniques – Practical explanations of serving, passing, setting, spiking, blocking, and digging, emphasizing the importance of precision and coordination.
Health Benefits of Volleyball
The session also emphasized the physical and mental benefits of volleyball, which include:
Cardiovascular Health and Endurance – The dynamic movements in volleyball help improve heart health and stamina.
Strength and Agility – Jumping, sprinting, and defensive moves develop muscle strength and flexibility.
Coordination and Balance – Volleyball enhances hand-eye coordination, balance, and reaction time.
Mental Focus and Social Skills – Playing in a team fosters communication, teamwork, and strategic decision-making.
Stress Relief and Endorphin Release – The physical exertion of the sport triggers mood-enhancing endorphins, reducing stress and anxiety.
Hands-On Volleyball Workshop – March 14, 2025
To reinforce the lessons from the iSHARE session, LGMED organized a volleyball game as a workshop on March 14, 2025. The participants applied their newly acquired skills and techniques in a friendly yet competitive match. The workshop focused on:
Practicing fundamental techniques such as serving, passing, setting, and spiking
Understanding team coordination and strategic formations
Improving communication and teamwork on the court
Participants were also introduced to simple health break exercises, including squats and side lunges, to improve flexibility and prevent injuries. The session concluded with an open forum, where participants discussed proper execution techniques and game strategies.
The LGMED iSHARE session on Volleyball aligns with DILG Region 10’s commitment to promoting health, wellness, and teamwork among its personnel. By integrating sports and fitness discussions into workplace activities, DILG aims to foster a more active, engaged, and healthier workforce.
