CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, April 10 — In line with its ongoing commitment to promoting employee wellness, holistic development, and shared learning, LGMED successfully conducted its latest iShare session titled “iShare: Basketball”. The activity was facilitated by Statistician I Dexter T. Cejas, and was designed to introduce and reinforce the core skills and values essential to the sport of basketball.
The session brought together LGMED personnel in a dynamic and educational environment where participants not only learned the technical aspects of the game but also developed a deeper appreciation for how sports can contribute to overall well-being. The activity aimed to nurture individual and team skills while fostering a spirit of camaraderie, healthy competition, and mutual respect among colleagues.
During the session, participants explored and practiced the foundational techniques of basketball. Facilitator Dexter T. Cejas emphasized the importance of mastering basic skills such as:
Dribbling – Proper dribbling using the fingertips rather than the palms, maintaining a low posture for better control, and using the off-arm to protect the ball;
Passing – Accurate passing techniques including chest passes for short distances, bounce passes to navigate around defenders, and overhead passes for long-range delivery;
Shooting – Developing form and consistency in jump shots, free throws, and layups;
Defense – Establishing a solid defensive stance, quick lateral footwork, and maintaining an active presence with hands up for shot blocking and interceptions.
Cejas stressed that consistent practice and attention to these fundamental skills are key to improving both individual performance and team dynamics. By grounding the session in hands-on activities, participants were able to gain practical knowledge and apply key principles in real time.
In addition to skill-building, the session explored the multifaceted benefits of playing basketball, further illustrating its value as both a sport and a personal development tool. These benefits were categorized into three main areas:
Physical Benefits: Basketball is a full-body workout that enhances cardiovascular health, builds muscle, increases stamina, and improves hand-eye coordination and agility.
Mental Benefits: Playing the sport promotes mental clarity, increases focus and strategic thinking, reduces stress levels, and reinforces discipline through structured training and gameplay.
Social Benefits: The game cultivates teamwork, leadership, communication, resilience, and the ability to gracefully handle both victories and setbacks. It also encourages respect for others and builds long-term interpersonal bonds.
The iShare activity also delved into the historical context of basketball, tracing its roots from its invention by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 to its present-day status as a globally celebrated sport. Special mention was made of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)—Asia’s oldest professional basketball league—which has played a significant role in promoting the sport locally and inspiring generations of Filipino athletes.
In his closing remarks, Cejas highlighted that iShare: Basketball is more than just a sporting session—it is a reflection of the agency’s dedication to fostering a culture of continuous learning, personal growth, and employee engagement. He encouraged all participants to carry forward the discipline, teamwork, and resilience learned through the sport into their daily lives and professional roles.
Following the discussion of theories, LGMED personnel engaged in a basketball game to put the theories into practice.
