As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most affected sectors is the LGBTQ Plus. The Philippine government is strictly implementing a community quarantine which has economically affected the LGBTQ Plus sector. Some members were retrenched from their work, while others lost their jobs.
This inspired me, together with LGBTQ Plus friends, to form the support system "LGBTQ Plus Philippines." As members of this support system, we campaign in schools, universities, and private companies to join in the advocacy and help the LGBTQ Plus sector.
Presently, we have three programs: Rice to Rise Program; HIV/AIDS Program; and the Dr. Mauro Allan Padua Amparado Nursing Scholarship.
1. Rice to Rise Program.
As more LGBTQ Plus individuals are becoming jobless due to the pandemic, we regularly distribute rice to this sector, ensuring that they have food on their tables. Although we prioritize the LGBTQ Plus sector, we have recently extended this service to men and women who serve as front liners.
2. HIV/AIDS Program.
In 2017, the Philippines has a total of 68,000 HIV/AIDS cases (for all ages), 760 Deaths due to AIDS in 2017, and 12,000 new cases of HIV cases for 2017.
One of our challenges in this advocacy is the stigma and discrimination which Persons living with HIV/AIDS are facing in the country right now. Most of them are losing jobs and financial assistance for these individuals are essential to cover for food, clothing, hospitalization and HIV/AIDS-related treatment.
Every year, we campaign for HIV/AIDS Awareness, Acceptance and a change of people's Attitude through a Fun Run and Zumba held every 1st of December in celebration of the World AIDS Day. You too can help! Join us and help transform the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. They are positive with HIV/AIDS, but we can make their situations positive, their way of thinking positive, and their lives positive!
3. The Dr. Mauro Allan Padua Amparado Nursing Scholarship
Named after the founder of LGBTQ Plus Philippines, this Nursing Scholarship aims to financially support the tuition fees and miscellaneous fees of students enrolled in the Nursing Program of a university.
