The Lexington Habitat Patch Project helps residents convert small pieces of lawn into dense native plant habitat.
These patches support pollinators, birds, and biodiversity while creating beautiful, living landscapes that require less mowing and fewer inputs over time.
The goal is to facilitate small, practical projects so many homeowners can participate. A patch can start as small as 50 square feet.
If you’re curious about adding habitat to your yard, we’d love to hear from you.
A habitat patch is a dense planting of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers designed to mimic the layered structure of natural ecosystems.
Even small patches can provide meaningful habitat and ecological benefits when designed well.
• Native flowering plants for pollinators
• Shrubs that provide berries and nesting habitat
• Small trees that anchor the ecosystem over time
• Plant combinations adapted to your site’s sun, soil, and moisture
Each patch is designed for the specific conditions of the yard where it’s planted.
The Lexington Habitat Patches Project has been created by LexCAN (Lexington Climate Action Network), It grew out of a pocket forest initiative ecological restoration concept. "Habitat Patches" aims to match implementation and scale with residential needs in both the short and long term.
