Where does the swim element take place - pool or open water?
Both. Our club provides the children with open water, sea and lake swim training from May until September. Look at the individual races for the distances and swim location on the event info.
Does my child need a race bike?
No, some races are held with the bike leg on grass and some on hard tarmac surfaces (circuits closed to traffic) mountain bikes are fine to get you started and great fun but to be competitive with the faster children, a road bike with drop handlebars would be best.
The club coaches can provide advice and guidance to members on the types of bike, makes, size and suitability.
I have heard that there are restrictions to the gearing and used in some races?
That is correct, last year Tri England introduced rules which prevent children riding in races using very high or hard gears, usually compliance can be achieved by a quick adjustment to the gears, sometimes though new gearing elements may be needed, for more info visit triathlon England children’s gearing restrictions. Assistance and advice can be provided by the club coaches.
I have heard that there are wheel regulations in some races?
That is correct, British Triathlon have introduced regulations for wheels, for more info visit British Triathlon Wheel Regulations for TriStar, Youth and Junior Draft-Legal Racing. Assistance and advice can be provided by the club coaches.
Are the races expensive to enter?
Usually between £10 and £35.

Yes, please see the relevant section on the website, Mick, Darren and Ellie are qualified Triathlon coaches. Training is mainly held at Leweston school, Weymouth, Yeovil and Vobster Quay.

If you progress to a good standard you may be selected to represent the South West of England at the prestigious Inter Regional Championships (top 3 in each Tri Star 2 and Tristar 3 age group) where you will need to be a member of triathlon England.
