A Symbol is simply a fact that embodies 'Higher Truth'. To understand this better we have to take a look into a 'World-View' that isn't common practice anymore in modern secular societies which have become too alienated with nature & spirituality. These societies largely rely on 'Materialistic' & 'Nihilistic' worldviews that roughly imply that the construct of the universe is based on 'Matter'.
This in spite of the fact that in the scientific world, no general consensus has ever been reached on this view whether its in the fields of Formal, Natural or Social sciences. The problem with this perspective is that it only pursuits very rational questions like; 'How does it work ?' & 'What is it made of ?'. Within such pursuit no room is made for questions concerning 'Value' or 'Meaning' since they simply do not exist according to this world-view.
So if we want to achieve 'Meaning', we'll have to resort to a more naturalistic or 'Spiritual' cosmological perspective which dominated the early & late ancient human history for thousands of years. This 'Spiritual' world-view, which can be described as a 'Dentrocentric' model of reality, proved its worth by outputting endless artifacts & cultural expressions through various art-forms, science-studies and political & social constructs on which shoulders our current modern societies are actually build. Within this perspective the construct of the universe is made up of 2 main pillars (cosmic poles) coming & working together: 'Heaven' & Earth or 'Spirit' & 'Matter'. Here the central question revolves around; 'What does it mean ?' & 'What does it embody ?'. From this notion a conclusion could be made that 'Matter' in itself cannot bring forth 'Consciousness' but can only express it. Since for 'Matter' to become 'meaningful', 'Spirit' (consciousness) must first be 'instilled'. So to take it 1 step further; for 'Life' to sprout, appear, happen, exists or be possible; you need a fusion/union/exchange of these 2 main components.
*This idea of fusion is in my opinion a great analogy which can be of help in our design of both the UCX & function of the Tree.
Based on the book: ‘The Language of Creation’ by Author Matthieu Pageau
Because the appointed 'device of communication' in this project is a 'tree' in which the theme of life & death is expressed; exploring the symbolic narrative associations of it may provide a deeper structure & meaning that can help during the design & art development process. In human history this symbolic 'structure' has served as a universal construct which through time still re-appears in many cultures & its stories about the human narrative of life & death, expressed in also various contemporary art-forms like cinema for instance, which we are briefly going to explore.
Based on the book: ‘The Language of Creation’ by Author Matthieu Pageau
In above diagram the 'Tree' is a literal and symbolic construct bridging both poles of the cosmic spectrum; 'Heaven & Earth', since the 'Canopy' of the tree is reaching in the high 'Sky' (Heaven) while the 'Roots' are grounded in the low 'Soil' (Earth). Symbolically, the 'Canopy' symbolizes; all that is of the 'Spirit' or 'Consciousnesses', while the 'Roots' symbolizes; all that is of 'Matter' or 'Substance'.
From materialistic perspective; to grow a tree you need 2 primary elements to come together:
From spiritual symbolic perspective the 'Seed' = 'Spirit' needs to be planted into the 'Soil' = 'Matter' to produce 'Life'. So in a way the bridge between those 2 is formed when the most high 'Heaven' lowers & the most low 'Earth' rises. Or in other words; when Spirit'materializes' & Matter'refines' or becomes 'meaningful'
Therefor from the early history of humankind up to current times, the 'Tree' symbolizes 'Human Life'. According to the Cosmic Perspective; a human being in its core is a construct of both 'Spirit' & 'Matter' coming together, bridging both sides of the spectrum. On top of this; the reason why the 'Woman-side' symbolizes the 'Earth' and the 'Man-side' symbolizes the 'Heaven', is because it makes a perfect cosmic match: Like the 'Earth' the 'Woman' is the 'Soil' or 'Womb' in which new life can sprout & be nourished. For this to happen, it needs the 'Man' which is the 'Seed' that is being planted into the soil.
Arguably you could say that for 'Matter' to 'express' consciousness it needs to be 'informed' (information) which is by 'Spirit'. Or differently said; to draw or uplift something from its 'Solid' potential, it needs an 'Insubstantial' focal point (focus). So a '(Spot-) Light' needs to shine into the 'Darkness', bringing 'Order' into 'Chaos'. Which all are analogies to the same cosmological construct.
For this 'Expression' of 'Information' to happen, it needs an intermediate 'Transport-system' or medium bringing the information to its destination. Basically said, a 'Seed' or tree needs 'Water', transporting the minerals to its roots. Therefor this medium needs to have the power or property of 'Transformation' bringing the 'Higher Value' (Spirit) from Heaven to the 'Lower Form' (Matter) on Earth. We know that 'Water' has the ability to go from 'Vapor' state to 'Fluid' sate, to even 'Solid' state (ice). As we can observe scientifically; water starts high up in the atmosphere as a gas-form where (when becoming 'heavy' of 'substance'), it will transform into water as rain on top of the mountains, from where it will travel down by river-streams to the earth, catching minerals in its path to bring & release life to the soil. This is why in the symbolic world water is often associated with 'Fertility'.
This actually perfectly overlaps with the workings of the human body; since our body is fed & maintained by the nutritional minerals in our blood which come from digesting 'information' which is transported through our blood-veins to its destination so that we can grow & live.
However there is another amazing property of water which is actually discovered not so long ago and which astounded the scientific world; the power of storing information by 'Memory'. From cosmological & spiritual perspective, again this actually makes a perfect match. Since the fact that for water not just to be able to 'transport' minerals but also store a memory imprint of the mineral-info, it is able to 'inform' matter, in this case the tree, just like how in spiritual way 'consciousness' or 'spirit' informs matter by expression.

So if we take a look at how this is related to the symbolic meaning; besides purity & fertility, in for instance the Bible, 'Water' symbolizes the carrier of 'The Word', since 'Word' is a medium in which we can instill 'Value' / 'Wisdom' / 'Knowledge'.
So both 'Heaven' & 'Earth' are mirroring the same cosmological construct.
The Biblical phrase '...The Life is in the Blood...', makes makes more sense, when we apply the hidden meaning of this cosmological construct.
Crystal; reflective properties in relation to the Spirit.
During research for a different & personal project, I came across a very interesting video covering a study on 'Symbolism of the Tree' by Canadian Icon Artist & writer 'Jonathan Pageau' (brother of Matthieu). In this study Jonathan explores the deep narrative that runs through humanity since the beginning of human kind which is expressed by one of the oldest stories ever told, 'Adam & Eve'. In this story the hierarchical structure of the 'Tree' serves as a cosmic 'measurement of order', connecting 2 extremes; 'Heaven & Earth', 'Spirit & Matter', 'Order & Chaos', etc. Like explained in previous section.
In total 4 trees are put in a structural (mountain) hierarchy, from top to bottom; 'Tree of Life', 'Tree of Good & Evil, 'Olive Tree' and 'Thorn Tree or Bush'.
The 'Fall' of humankind, is symbolized by traveling down from Eden to the outside world. In other words traveling from the highest form of 'Order' (Tree of Life) down into 'Chaos' outside Eden. Here the 'Christ' idea is reflected & symbolized; as humans we aim or strive towards the 'ideal' self or hero archetype which is symbolized by the top of the mountain hierarchy. Once we lose sight of this higher ideal; we travel down the scale of meaning, value & order ending in meaninglessness, uselessness & disorder.
A strong spiritual connection is also made with 'Water' which is flowing from the 'Tree of Life' down the mountain to the 4 corners of the world resembling the 'Source of Life' bringing life or 'spirit' to all 'solid matter', the 'potential' which lies in the 'void' of 'chaos'.

This cosmic symbolic motif of the 'Tree' can be clearly observed in the animation film 'Song of the Sea', based on a Scandinavian tale / myth. From the outside we see almost the same hierarchical 'Eden' structure: The 'Tree of Life' placed on top of a mountain/hilltop, enclosed by a wall and guarded by stone figures (angels) at the entrance. The door-opening at the foot of the hill / mountain marks the transitional boundary between the 'Natural World' & the 'Underworld'.
The inside of the mountain acts as the 'In-between World'; a transition area. Here the tree is joined with the circle shaped water-well; a portal, connecting the natural world with the underworld.
*Note: This repeating 'visual theme' of the circle (the water-well), in particular 'circles within circles', relates back to the universal 'story theme' of a journey into oneself, which the main protagonist of this movie has to undertake to reconcile the loss of his mother.

In Ghibli Studio's animation feature film 'Laputa, Castle in the Sky', again this same motif of the mountain tree is the structural core of a highly advanced relic of an obscured past; a floating city in the sky. In the film's story, this lost city is depicted as an ideal 'Eden' realm, once build and inhabited by a nobel & royal family of people. A place where 'heaven' & 'earth' meet, this by the hybrid merge of 'nature' and 'technology'. The 'abandoned and lost state of being' symbolizes the corruption or 'fall' of humankind. Also the underworld is symbolized; in the movie, at some point the main protagonist looks down in what seems to be a waterpond but is in fact a massively flooded city-part. This indicates that by the corruption of man, reality of this world has transformed & submerged into chaos. This notion is completely in line with the universal symbolic notion of 'under water' being the realm of the underworld.
note: Originally, Laputa is a flying island described in the 1726 book Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift.

In the animation film 'Book of Life', a strong reference is made with the 'Tree of Life' and the 'Underworld' theme. In the film the main protagonist is embarking a journey to the underworld to find his lost love interest and deceased family relatives.
Plot:
In the Mexican town of San Angel, Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoë Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) have been friends ever since childhood. Although their lives have taken different paths -- Maria was sent to Europe, Joaquin joined the military, and Manolo studied to become a bullfighter -- one thing remains the same: Manolo and Joaquin both want to marry Maria. Little does the trio know that battling husband-and-wife deities have made a high-stakes wager on the love triangle's outcome.
