This week in Reading, we will continue building our phonics knowledge as we learn about adding the suffix ‘y’ to words to create adjectives, as well as exploring the new sounds ‘oy’ as in boy and ‘oi’ as in coin.
We will also dive into our new class text, Harry by the Sea by Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham. As we read, students will explore new vocabulary and build their understanding of synonyms for words such as annoy, shriek and grateful.

This week, our Grade 1s will dive into the world of oceans and sea life as they begin creating their very own information report. Students will choose an aquatic animal that they would like to become an expert on and begin researching fascinating facts using a range of non-fiction texts. They will discover how to find important information, record interesting facts and organise their ideas before beginning a draft of their very own information report. We can't wait to see what amazing sea creatures our budding experts choose to investigate!
This week, we will begin an exciting new topic: Multiplicative Thinking! Students will start building their understanding of multiplication through hands-on learning and practical problem-solving.
We will explore partitioning, equal sharing and repeated addition, helping students see how groups of objects can be organised and counted in different ways. Through games, manipulatives and real-life examples, students will begin developing the foundations they need for their multiplication journey.
This week is Bullying No Way Week, giving us an important opportunity to focus on kindness, inclusion and being an upstander.
Students will explore what it means to be kind, how our words and actions can make others feel, and how we can stand up for ourselves and others when something isn't right. We will discover how even the smallest acts of kindness can make a BIG difference!
To spread some kindness around our classroom, students will work together to create kindness chains, celebrating the thoughtful and caring actions they see in others.
We're diving into the OCEAN!
Students have been eagerly waiting to begin our new Oceans and Sea Life unit, and this week we finally get to jump in! Through a range of fun and engaging rotations, students will begin exploring the incredible world beneath the waves.
We will discover the different zones of the ocean, learn about fascinating marine life, investigate colourful coral reefs, and explore how we can help protect our oceans through sustainability.
This week in Reading, we will continue reviewing and revising the doubling rule (ff, ll, ss) while learning the new sound _y (as in puppy).
Students will build their decoding skills through engaging phonics activities and apply their learning while reading our new class novel, Captain Jack and the Pirates. Along the way, we'll explore exciting new vocabulary, including abandon, spied and hollered, and practise using these words in meaningful discussions and activities.
Our young authors will continue developing their narrative writing skills! Throughout the week, students will explore different writing focuses, including identifying nouns and verbs, improving the clarity of their sentences through editing, and revising important narrative features such as characters, setting, problem and solution. We're excited to see students grow in confidence as they create engaging stories and become thoughtful, independent writers.
In week 5, Students will continue to practise skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s from different starting numbers, identify missing numbers in skip counting patterns, and create their own sequences. Through hands-on games and problem-solving activities, students will discover how skip counting helps us solve multiplication problems and recognise number patterns all around us.
In Health, we will continue exploring ways to look after our wellbeing.
Students will learn calming strategies, relaxation techniques and ways to slow their bodies and minds when they are feeling overwhelmed. We'll discover helpful tools we can use both at school and at home to help us feel calm, focused and ready to learn.
As we wrap up our Melbourne/Naarm unit, we'll be exploring one of Melbourne's most iconic landmarks... the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)! Students will discover why the MCG is such an important place in our city, learn about its fascinating history, and discuss the many sporting and cultural events that have made it famous. It's a fantastic way to celebrate everything we've learned about our amazing city!
In Week 4, we will explore the new digraph 'aw' as in 'claw, 'au' as in 'autumn', and the doubling rule ('ff', 'll', 'ss').
During shared reading, we will read the new text 'The Lighthouse Keeper's Lunch' (Ronda Armitage & David Armitage). We will use our predicting and retelling skills!
In Writing, students will plan, draft and publish their very own good copy narrative story. Students will include narrative features such as beginning, middle, problem, solution. Students will also be using their editing skills to check their writing. We are looking forward to creating some super sentences!
In Maths, students will explore the topics of pattern, skip counting (by 2s, 5s and 10s) and length (informal units). Students will explore real life farm examples to practice skip counting forwards and backwards.
In Health, students will explore the concept of 'stress'.
Students will:
-Develop a definition of stress
-Describe how stress can be felt in the body
-Identify experiences that can cause people to feel stressed
-Describe strategies people can use to help them cope when they feel stressed
This week, students will continue learning about the geography of Melbourne. Students will dive deeper into the investigation of the Dandenong Ranges!
In Week 3, we will continue to explore the suffix 'ed' and past tense. We will learn the new tricky words: 'about', 'our' and 'ask'.
During shared reading, we will read the new text 'The Terrible Suitcase' by Emma Allen. We will revise our predicting, summarising and decoding skills.
In Writing, students will use The Terrible Suitcase as inspiration to write their own imaginative stories. Students will write based on their own suitcase, and what may be inside. This will encourage students to use their creativity, imagination, and storytelling skills while applying the narrative features they have been learning (beginning, middle, problem, solution).
In Maths, students will explore the topics 'estimating' and 'rounding'. We will use real life examples to estimate the number of seashells on a beach, counters in a jar, and much more! Students will also learn a fun rhyme about when to round up and when to round down...
In Health, students will continue to focus on problem-solving in groups and using communication to achieve set goals. They will reflect on the actions that make for effective teamwork and describe how teams can help each other if they have a problem.
This week, students will continue learning about the geography of Melbourne. Students will dive deeper into the investigation of Melbourne's Train Network and Flinders Street Station!
In Week 2, we will continue exploring vowel and letter patterns by learning the digraphs ow (as in cow) and ou (as in cloud).
During shared reading, we will continue reading Bears Don't Read by Emma Chichester Clark. Students will be exploring the characters and settings in the story while building their comprehension skills.
In Writing, students will use Bears Don't Read as inspiration to write their own imaginative stories. They may create an alternative ending or invent a new adventure, such as Bears Don't.... This will encourage students to use their creativity, imagination, and storytelling skills while applying the narrative features they have been learning.
In Maths, students have been loving our Money unit, where they have been adding and subtracting different amounts. This week, they will create their own 'shop' and use Australian money to purchase items from a toy catalogue! Students will practise making purchases, exchanging money, and calculating change while developing their financial maths skills.
In Health, students will be focusing on problem-solving in groups and using communication to achieve set goals. They will reflect on the actions that make for effective teamwork and describe how teams can help each other if they have a problem.
Next week, students will continue learning about the geography of Melbourne.
Students will investigate the key features of our local area including the Yarra River, our train network, the Dandenong Ranges and the MCG. We will learn about Indigenous perspectives of our local area including creation stories where we will learn about Bunjil the Eagle.
In Week 1, we will continue to learn about the bossy 'e'. We will explore the split digraphs 'o_e', 'e_e' and 'u_e'.
In shared reading times, we will begin the new text Bears Don't Read (Emma Chichester Clark). Students will be using their predicting and summarising skills!
In Writing this week, we will revise recount writing and share some of our school holiday fun! Students will also dive into some creative writing based on their own ideas and experiences.
In Maths, we will continue our exploration of subtraction by using the related additive number fact. Students will also have a go with adding and subtracting money using real life situations.
In Health this week, we will explore the word 'resilience' and explore some of the following questions:
