Functions of Behaviors

Do you have a child that you interact with that exhibits behaviors that you do not understand? Before you can respond to the behavior, its important to understand what a child is trying to communicate through the behavior. Once you know this, you have a starting point to begin teaching lagging skills. In this session, participants will explore behaviors that impede children from making progress socially, emotionally, behaviorally, and functionally. Participants will walk away with tools to implement the next time things get challenging.

Part 1: Functional Behavioral Assessments

Do you find yourself questioning which instruments, interview forms, or direction to go when you start assessing behavior? Educators will explore the components of writing a meaningful functional behavioral assessment to assit those students in the classroom who exhibit challenging behaviors. From beginning to end, participants will learn the process of writing a functional behavior assessment as well as tips for presenting the assessment to decision-making teams.

Part 2: Writing Meaningful Behavior Intervention Plans based on data of the Functional Behavioral Assessment

Participants will analyze data collected throughout the creation of the functional behavioral assessment in an effort to create a powerful and meaningful behavior intervention plan. Participants will walk away with a toolbox of strategies to implemented based on the suspected function of behavior. Participants will also explore data collection tools to help drive decision making for future interventions.

Part 3: Analyzing the Effectiveness of Behavior Intervention Plans created from Functional Behavioral Assessments

Decision-making teams will learn to analyze the data that has been collected throughout the implementation process of the behavior intervention plan. Teams will discuss student progress and make recommendations for revision to the plan to increase student progress towards their targeted behaviors.
