This book is an alarm signal for the "engineering shortage" that can be noticed all over the world. Engineering is a great profession, but based on my experience, I must admit that it is not an easy one. It demands a lot of time and requires studying and dedication. It also requires a life-long continuing education.
This book will address why the number of graduates is declining in engineering universities and why so many quit after the first years and become only technicians.
I refuse to believe that young people avoid the great responsibility of engineers. Maybe they think they are not getting paid enough and seek a more lucrative career.
Furthermore, they hear about the massive layoffs that happen when a big engineering company no longer receives new projects. It is our duty as engineers to find the real reasons.
In conclusion, the message will be an homage to all engineers who work with passion, professional probity and willingness to put in long hours. This will encourage the new generations of college and university graduates to become engineers.
It is the parents’ duty to encourage their children from a young age to choose a career that is right for them. Begin with smart toys such as Legos and assembled cars that kids, with their little hands and brain, can take apart and build again. Find kids who are passionate about the
video game SimCity. Surely there is a percentage of kids who want to build a real city. In the book, I give as an example, a child who built the model of the Titanic with Legos, and a disabled child who used Legos to make himself a prosthetic arm. These are children that need to be encouraged. Do not hand them a tablet in order to have more free time to fix your problems. Children are the number one priority; they are the future.
The same is necessary in day cares and primary schools. Parents and teachers must guide children towards building activities and team spirit.
Let’s Build Together!
It is our duty as engineers to make an example of what we build anywhere in the world. Engineering has no borders; wherever there is a big construction site, you will find engineers, technicians and workers from all over the world. They all build together, one big family,
a great team where they respect each other, no matter their gender, religion or culture.
My last project in the Middle East is a good example and is presented in one of the chapters: we had 29 different nationalities, multiple religions, different family situations and many expatriates. And we got the job done TOGETHER – because we built the dream of our PASSION!!!
There is no excuse in not finding work; you must love what you do, turn your career into a passion, and make the necessary sacrifices when needed. You will always succeed.
