We spent the first day or so in Rome before the walk started and I could feel the lightness that comes from avoiding the day-to-day tasks of being at home. No responsibility, no clients to think about, no Wi-Fi issues, no Zoom calls, in short no worries.

We had the odd day when the weather was shocking. We were hit by three days of gale-force winds that made walking close to impossible. It really was a case of one step forward and two back on occasions.

There were days where the hills were brutal. That combined with 40-degree heat on occasion had me contemplating quitting! One particular day sticks in my mind. A 28k walk started ending with 10k of continual uphill with no shade, 42 degrees in the shade and 1200 metres of climb. I was exhausted but 2 beers later, an unbelievable view and the realisation that we had a day off in this incredible hilltop town and smiles returned.

Fourth - the mental health benefits. I have bitten my nails for probably all but the first 8 of my 58 years. Within days of our walk starting my nails grew and I have cut them more on this trip than in the rest of my life put together.

My involvement with Rethink Mental Illness as well as part of our motivation for the walk was that we have both my case my first wife and for Lisa her elder brother. We also raised just under 20,000 for mental health charities.

I am a National Trainer for the International Nordic Walking Federation and have been teaching Nordic walking for over twelve years. During this time I have taught hundreds of people of all levels and abilities to improve their fitness, body shape and wellbeing through Nordic walking.

It was a magical gateway. Nordic walking was powerful and strong, but also supportive and kind on my joints. Through it I was able to return to full fitness and my body is in better shape now than it was when I was running. I can see the ripple of muscles on my arms and shoulders, back pain is a thing of the past, and I now walk with naturally good posture. I feel fit and strong and in touch with my body and I hardly ever get coughs or colds. The best thing though is that it is fun and sociable and I am doing a walk and a workout all in one.

I felt I could contribute my skills to redress that balance and had the immense good fortune to meet Subitha Baghirathan who has extensive links with many community and voluntary organisations and social prescribing teams. Together we have developed an NHS and private sector funded Nordic walking wellbeing programme to encourage more people, particularly those from African, Caribbean, and South Asian communities and other people who are visibly minority ethnic, to improve their mental and physical health through Nordic walking.

I run bespoke Nordic walking workshops to share my knowledge and help make a difference. If you are interested in learning Nordic walking or refreshing your knowledge go to my Learn with Vicky page for my upcoming workshop dates.

As I was walking along the dyke, I started to notice that some of the farmlands ahead on the opposite side of the water looked familiar. When I got to here, I knew exactly where I was, since it was one of the places that I had to turn back to figure out where I was while walking the Vedder Trail. I was lost a few times on that trail and this was one of them. There was that huge pile of dirt and the trail just seemed to end. It would be easy for me to do the trail now because I know exactly where to go when the trail disappears. But for now, I just walked back to the reserve on the trail instead of the dyke.

Walking is a great way to get the physical activity needed to obtain health benefits. Walking does not require any special skills. It also does not require a gym membership or any expensive equipment.

We have all levels of walkers, so you can walk at your own pace. We have several regular meeting places and other places that will be added from time to time, but will mostly walk within Essex County.

We specialise in Nordic walking, a sociable and easy way to boost your health and fitness. Find out about our free wellness classes, learn Nordic walking for yourself, and join our friendly community.

Loving Father, thank You for this book. It is a light to those who are walking through dark times. Thank You for Sarah Van Diest, her love of Your Word, her love for her friend, and her generosity in sharing her meditations. Bless her readers and her with every spiritual blessing and Your great and precious promises. Use God in the Dark to minister to those who are suffering and help them see Your light. Amen.

Sarah, Your book is beautiful and just what people need when they are experiencing dark times. May God continue to make His face shine upon you and give you peace. Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Karen

The last Let's Walk program was a partnership with the City of Greater Bendigo and Healthy Heart Victoria where we lead women who live in and around Long Gully on weekly walks from Tuesday morning November 26th 2019 until March 10th 2020. See a news story from the Bendigo Advertiser about the Long Gully program here.

The aims of the project are to build community connectedness, physical health and wellbeing by populating streets with walkers. Maribyrnong neighbourhoods are a great place to walk; rich in history, art and interesting sites. And Lynbrook neighbourhoods offer pleasant, shady streets and parks with majestic trees of cultural significance.

We've mapped seven quality, safe and appealing neighbourhood walking routes using www.walkingmaps.com.au. Coloured footpath markers line the routes of four of these routes, making the walks easy for anyone to follow.

The City of Casey is a Victoria Walks Official Supporter. We worked together with Lynbrook Community Centre to provide a welcoming space to start and finish our weekly walks in Lynbrook. We managed to attract a core group of twelve regular walkers.

Upon registration, the walkers were given a Let's Walk keyring to keep. Each keyring was numbered and participants were asked to remember the number to use in any information gathering related to Let's Walk Lynbrook. Our Number One keyring holder attended every walk for nine weeks and received a prize for being an inspirational walker!

Victoria Walks partnered with the City of Maribyrnong, which is an Official Supporter of Victoria Walks, to identify and map neighbourhood walking routes in both the Angliss area of Footscray and Yarraville. Decals were installed on the footpath along the route to help walkers find their way around the neighbourhood. A brochure for both the Angliss and Yarraville routes were also printed and disseminated.

Attitudes to walking in the neighbourhood improved, with participants generally feeling safer, more comfortable and more connected with people in their neighbourhood and therefore more likely to walk.

Angliss Neighbourhood House were so inspired by Let's Walk Angliss that they wrote a new program for their students to map their own walks and inspire others to get out in their neighbourhood to walk and learn!
