Liberia City

A spirited provincial capital, Liberia is friendly and progressive. Though largely used by travelers as a jumping-off point to national parks and beaches, it deserves a day or two of your time.

Find local culture at the Hidden Garden Art Gallery and sample craft beer at Captain J Match Brewing Company near the airport.

With its hot and dry climate, Rincon de la Vieja National Park offers hiking trails that allow you to discover its unique wildlife as well as exotic flora. The area is also home to mud pools and thermal springs, making it ideal for nature lovers and those looking for an active vacation.

The park is located near the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia. From there, you can take public transportation, a taxi, or rent a car to reach the Las Pailas sector.

Visiting Rincon de la Vieja is an amazing way to experience the culture of Guanacaste. This province is known for its cowboy traditions, which are celebrated each year on July 25th during the Annexation Festival with parades, horse shows, and traditional music.

Playa Hermosa is a gorgeous beach with trodden light-brown sand and a front-row view of fishing boats moored in Hermosa Bay. Its serene atmosphere draws repeat visitors year after year and its small community has upscale dining steps from the beach and varied accommodations, including condos, timeshares, and vacation rentals.

Although Playa Hermosa gets a lot of visitors, it’s usually quieter than some of its neighbors. Outside of the weekend and high season, you’ll often have Playa Hermosa all to yourself.

It’s an easy 20-minute drive from Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia to Hermosa Beach. A private shuttle from the airport is around $200 for 1-8 people and a shared one is $50-100 per person. There are also taxis available. Renting a car is the best option if you want to explore Guanacaste’s many other activities.
