Introduction to Gravitational Lensing
Gravitational lensing is a phenomenon where light from a distant object is bent as it passes near a massive object, such as another galaxy or a cluster of galaxies. This bending of light, caused by the curvature of space-time as predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, can magnify, distort, or create multiple images of the background object. It is a powerful tool in astrophysics for studying dark matter, detecting distant galaxies, and understanding the structure of the universe.
