Reflections
Where I was.
Reflecting on my experience with the Humanizing Online STEM Academy, I realize how much my understanding of online teaching has evolved. Before the Academy, I felt confident in my grasp of online teaching tools and practices, having completed CSUCI's THRIVE summer program and ACUE's Effective Online Teaching Practices. However, the Academy opened my eyes to new dimensions of online education. I discovered the power of innovative tools such as Flipgrid and Adobe Spark, and the importance of incorporating teaching approaches like the 'warm demander' technique. The Humanizing Online STEM Academy has been instrumental in showing me how to make purely online courses more engaging and personal, infuse more human elements into online teaching, and enhance the learning experience for my students.
Where I am.
I find myself enriched and transformed as an educator. This experience has deepened my understanding of how to create a more inclusive and equitable online learning environment. One of the most enlightening aspects for me was learning about and implementing the 'liquid syllabus' and 'Wisdom Wall' assignments. These tools have not only made my courses more engaging but also more accessible, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among students. Additionally, creating a 'bumper video' for my courses was an exciting way to establish a more personal connection with my students right from the outset. A particularly transformative experience was the Student Voices Project. This direct feedback is something I intend to incorporate into my teaching strategies, ensuring that my courses are responsive to student needs and preferences.
Where I am going.
As I continue to develop my courses, I am more conscious of video length and content, striving to make my material concise yet impactful. I am also more comfortable with Canvas design and am focusing on improving course navigation to make online learning a smoother and more intuitive experience for my students. The Humanizing Online STEM Academy has equipped me with the skills and insights to become a more empathetic, effective, and humanized instructor. I am grateful for this transformative journey and excited to apply these learnings to my future teaching endeavors.
Big warm thank you to the instructors of the Humanizing Online STEM Academy!
Liquid Syllabus
In developing the liquid syllabus for my Human Resource Management class, my aim is to provide both prospective and current students with an engaging and informative first impression. This digital syllabus serves as a dynamic, responsive website where students can not only learn about my teaching philosophy and the course structure but also get a sense of my commitment to their learning journey.
It includes a detailed Week 1 success kit and our course pact, outlining what students should know and expect before logging into their online course.
I plan to make this liquid syllabus accessible even before students register for the course. This approach is designed to ensure that students begin their Human Resource Management course with a clear understanding of what to anticipate, thereby setting the stage for a good learning experience.
Course Card
A Canvas Course Card acts as a digital 'front door' to a course, serving a crucial role in setting students' expectations and drawing their interest. For my Human Resource Management course, the course card is particularly important in breaking the stereotype that HR is merely about policies and procedures. Instead, I want to emphasize that it's about talent development, a dynamic and integral aspect of any organization. The image on the course card illustrates this by showing people in engaging, collaborative settings.
Homepage
My course homepage is designed to be both welcoming and informative, serving as a key starting point for the class. It features a course banner and a warm, inviting welcome message right at the top. Similarly, my photo is displayed alongside my contact details, adding a personal touch and humanizing the learning experience.
The homepage also includes a course tour video. This video provides a quick guide to the course layout and resources, helping students focus on learning without worrying about where to find things. Overall, my goal was to design a homepage that is both easy to navigate and emotionally welcoming, setting the tone for a supportive and engaging learning experience.
Getting to Know You Survey
The "Getting to Know You Survey" for my students at the beginning of the Human Resource Management course is designed to establish a foundation of trust. This survey is an important tool for me to gain insights into the backgrounds, aspirations, and potential challenges faced by each student.
One of the key questions in this survey is, “What is the one thing that is most likely to interfere with your success in this class?” This question helps me uncover any external or internal factors that might impact a student’s success in the class. It's not just about academic performance; this survey is a statement of my commitment to seeing each student as a whole person, with unique experiences and learning habits.
Wisdom Wall
The Wisdom Wall in our course is a dynamic space that benefits everyone involved. It's where current students share their study strategies and reflections, helping them figure out what works best for them. This self-reflection is key to their long-term success and also lets them learn from each other's experiences.
For new students, the Wisdom Wall is like a treasure trove of tips and motivation. It shows them that it's normal to face challenges and that they can succeed too.
As the instructor, I find the Wisdom Wall incredibly useful. It gives me a peek into how students are doing and what they’re learning, which helps me keep improving the course.
Bumper Video
For a chapter in my Human Resource Management course, titled "Sustainable Competitive Advantage through Effective People Management," I have created a bumper video as an engaging entry point for students. This brief, 1-3 minute video, made using Adobe Express, introduces students to the core concept of the course: how effective people management contributes to creating a sustainable competitive advantage in the business world. By replacing a previously text-heavy introduction with this vibrant, concise video, I aim to cater to different learning preferences in line with best Universal Design for Learning (UDL) practices. This approach not only makes the content more accessible but also sets the tone for the course, emphasizing the importance of human elements in HR management.
Microlecture
In this Human Resource Management microlecture, students will not only be equipped to identify and articulate the key components of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills—but will also be able to explain the significance of emotional intelligence in leadership and management roles.
This format allows students to focus on these crucial concepts without the potential overwhelm of a longer lecture. By adopting a short, engaging video format, this microlecture also serves as a resource that students can easily revisit for revision or clarification throughout the course.
My goal is to equip students not only with the knowledge of what emotional intelligence entails but also its practical application in real-world HR scenarios. This microlecture will help them understand why emotional intelligence is essential for successful HR management.
