Overview
New furniture was to be purchased in the library to improve the space. We wanted to find out how students currently used the space to meet their furniture needs.
Goals
Improve seating and table space.
Understand how students use the current spaces.
Use student interviews to understand work habits and prospective needs.
One of the many work zones in the library.
How It Was Done
I observed students in their work areas, noting items on the table and head-counts at tables.
I interviewed students about their likes, dislikes, and optimal work space.
What Was Discovered
Students only sit directly next to friends.
Students don't 'like to sit directly next to people they don't know.
Students need lots of table space (laptop, phone, books, etc.).
Students need a place to keep materials safe when stepping away.
Students like to sit and/or stand.
Add plants to create “division” between seats that are close.
Add larger adjustable tables for students to spread out materials and food/drink.
Add movable tables so that students can re-arrange seating for small and big groups.
Add carpeted floors to control sound.
Add lockers to keep items safe when they step away from the work area.
Add more outlets.
Add various types of seating (high and low tables and chairs, soft seating, private seating).
