PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Greetings Duzine and Lenape Families,
On behalf of the Physical Education team here at New Paltz Central schools, we welcome all of you to the 2025-2026 school year. Each year brings excitement and renewed spirits. As a staff, we look forward to working with your children and your families to ensure a positive and productive experience in our classrooms.
Our philosophy is quite simple, we want your children to learn in an environment that fosters enjoyment, success, and achievement through a myriad of activities and lessons. We encourage our students to take risks, challenge themselves, and have fun while doing so.
Our phrase is simple, “love it, learn it, live it!” We stress fitness, sportsmanship, and skill development while engaging our students in fun activities that foster learning in an inclusive and positive environment. We encourage our students to take what they learn and apply it throughout their lifetime. We also believe that physical fitness is our best life insurance. We continue to stress making healthy choices and taking care of one’s body properly and safely.
One of the unique aspects of Physical Education is that we get to meet and work with ALL of the students in our buildings. Each child is unique and worthy and we continue to recognize the gifts and qualities that each child brings to our classroom.
We will instruct and provide lessons that pertain to the New York State Physical Education learning standards through a wide variety of activities.
LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR!

EXPECTATIONS AND ASSESSMENT
This is a gentle reminder that your child must be prepared for class by wearing sneakers for each class. Check with the classroom teacher to find out what days your child has Physical Education. THIS IS FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD AND OTHERS AS WELL.
We also encourage all of our students to come to class ready to have fun and learn by having a good attitude toward one another and a team building mentality.
All students are expected to participate unless medically excused. Arrangements will be made during class for those unprepared for class.
Students will be evaluated using Standards Based Assessments according to the NYS PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS. (Note: Each grade level will be assessed according to each grade level standard as defined by NYS Curriculum and Assessment Guidance Document for Physical Education.) For grades K-5 we are focused mainly on these 4 standards:
Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
Standard 2: Applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
Standard 3: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of activity and fitness.
Standard 4: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others
This page provides an overview of the state standards for physical education. The standards are a guide for the development of well-planned instructional practice at the local district level. These standards are mandatory to help shape the design of all components of physical education program.

Please note: Standards for prekindergarten physical development and health are included in the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards: A Resource for School Success. This resource consolidates all learning standards for prekindergarten students into one document and organizes them by key learning domains.
The New Paltz Central School District exists to serve all children in our community. We are committed to fostering a cohesive and inclusive culture from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, across all buildings and departments. We affirm and respect every student’s identity. This includes, but is not limited to, honoring their preferred name and pronouns.
