FAQs
What suit to order Boys vs. Girls for practice?
BOYS: can wear regular swim trunks, jammers, or speedos for practice.
Jammers are the most common suit used during practice, as they help decrease drag in the water. When choosing a jammer size make sure that the suit fits well is comfortable along the waistline and doesn’t go past the knees.
GIRLS: are allowed to wear one-piece swimsuits.
When choosing one of these swimsuits make sure it fits well is comfortable on the shoulders and does not go past the knees.
What type of suit to wear during Swim Meets?
During swim meets you want a suit that fits your swimmer well and is comfortable. These suits should be tighter than normal practice suits, so they create less drag and are more streamlined. They should not touch the swimmers’ knees at all. If the suit is baggy or seems to have wrinkles you need to move to a smaller size.
What are Tech Suits?
Tech suits are commonly used during major swim meets (Sectionals, State, & Regionals).
There are a variety of tech suits on the market that are made of different materials (Nylon vs Polyester) and have different benefits (High-waisted breaststroke vs compression banded vs regular) sometimes.
The main purpose of these suits is to reduce drag in the water and allow for longer glides
They are also expensive depending on what you are looking for.
In the YMCA & USA Swimming League only swimmers 13 years old and older are allowed to compete with these suits also.
When ordering one of these suits make sure to take correct measurements, especially for girls as they are very form-fitting and tight. They are supposed to take time to put on at swim meets.
If you are interested in ordering a suit please contact Jack for help.
Are meets required? Do I have to go to every practice?
Swim meets are not required for swimmers to go to. But they are a good way of showing the kids how their hard work during practice has paid off. Swim practices are held 3 days a week. During the season there will be other optional practices that you do not need to come to if you can't make it. Typically these days are during holidays & snow days.
What do I have to do at Home Swim Meets?
During home swim meets we need timers for each lane, officials, and a clerk of course.
Timers = Record the times that the kids swim in each of their events.
Officials = Are required for every swim meet, to ensure that the swimmers are swimming the strokes correctly and everything is fair.
Clerk of Course: Lines up the swimmers before each event and ensures that the kids know which heat and lane they are in making the swim meet go faster.
How do I qualify for State/Regionals?
For State and Regionals, there are qualifying times that must be achieved to enter into that swim meet. These times are dependent on the swimmer's age and what event they are swimming. These times are listed on the State and Regional pages.
When will we get ribbons?
I hand out ribbons during swim practice. I do not get ribbons from past swim meets typically until the next swim meet. At the end-of-year party, I will have any ribbons swimmers did not pick up during the season.
How do I sign up for a swim meet?
I have a clipboard that is located at the downstairs front desk. It has everyone's name on it along with a list of events. Swimmers are allowed to sign up for 3 events, 2 relays & 2 exhibition events. Make sure to sign up for an event by the Tuesday before that specific meet. There will be some meets where sign-ups will be required to be done earlier. You can also message me on TEAM APP if you forget to sign up for any events.
NOTE: Have your kids try new events (Different distances & different strokes), a lot of kids like to stay with one or two strokes and the shortest distances. Having them do more gets them more experienced with new events that they may be good at.
Exhibition event times are not officially counted, these are good if you're swimmer wants to try out a new event without sacrificing one of their main events.
