SPROUTS | Final Degree Project
SPROUTS is set in the post-apocalyptic future, where humans living in Oasis learned to harvest the renewable energy and build and entire city complex around the Grand Tree. The story revolves around the young engineer prodigy Oto who invents SPROUTS - little robot shells that can be operated by normal plants, and the pirate kids, who come from the deadliest desert driven by the vendetta of their Captain. The visual language aims to contrast the solarpunk and futurist aesthetic of the Oasis and the rustic and industrial vibes of the pirate ship and its inhabitants.

As the project idea started to shape I instantly jumped onto an opportunity to design the pirate kids: we didn't have a solid idea of what they are like yet, so my first proposal was to make each of them so different from each other. That's how pirates under code names Leader, Mechanic and Baby were born, and despite undergoing quite a lot of changes throughout the exploration process, I am super proud that the team liked their essence.
While designing pirates we put a lot of attention to giving them unique colors, and draw loose inspiration from animals: frogs for Baby, fly for Mechanic, and octopus for later Leader variations. Moreover, we allocated them to embody different metals, and that's how we came up with their names: copper or bronze for Copper (Baby), silver for Yin (Mechanic), and gold for Freya (Leader).
They are stinky little pirates, and we put all that freedom they have into the way they express themselves through their own styles, and the way they spice up and bedazzle their pirate ship!

Next to design was Oto, and unlike pirates he is a part of the Oasis city, that maybe doesn't accept him as much as he wishes they did. We wanted for him to seem a lot more futuristic, with cool sleek gadgets, and an innocent "proper boy" kind of look to him. He is extremely privileged and doesn't know that, so his encounters with pirates lead him to realize how his paradise of a city was built on the resource wars and profiting of technology. Still, he is a boy with a big kind heart, who spends a lot of time both in the labs and the garden, so his looks aimed to reflect that.
