A Boot Camp for Tomorrow’s Professional
Program included a one-day workshop to teach STEM graduate students several areas of scientific communication that are not part of the core STEM graduate program yet are critical for success in any field. Each topic was taught by an expert in the area, with the purpose of teaching participants a solid understanding of best practices to incorporate professionally. The workshop was held in the following three sections:
· Intellectual Property: Legal Overview and Best Practices
An overview of intellectual property rights for patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights, focusing on patent rights. A case study of a specific patent was performed while addressing the patent prosecution and enforcement process.
· Striving for Excellence in Research Presentations
Introduction to the assertion-evidence presentation structure, which is more effective at helping the audience to understand and remember technical content.
· Tell Your Story: Talking to the Media and the Public
Interactive session that provided a lively and practical overview on how scientists and engineers can speak to the public, handle the media, and describe their work to a lay audience.
