Munich, 24 April 2018 - Danish inventors GauteMunch, Erik Hansen and team are the creators of an invention that teaches thefundamentals of computer coding and robotics. First brought to market in 1998by Danish company LEGO, theiraward-winning MINDSTORMSRoboticsInvention System productseries enables users to construct toy robots featuring digitally enhanced components that "learn" behavioursvia a programming interface. The seriesmakes technologies previously only accessible to people with science degreesavailable as creative tools for children and other playful inventors.

Looking ahead, creativeprogrammers are in high demand and triggering children's curiosity withcomputer-based toys could build much-needed talent in Europe. A current reportfound that 40% of people in the European Union have "insufficient"digital skills, while 22% have none. Although the information and computertechnology (ICT) sector is creating 120 000 new jobs per year, Europe couldface a shortage of more than 756 000 skilled ICT workers by 2020. According tothe inventors, the LEGO robotics programme is already showing effects, as theysay they often meet new students at technical universities who credit their toyinvention for being the reason they started a technical education.
