LEGO City introduced something quite original this year with the Missions series: there are no instructions, instead giving the builder a series of building challenges. Is this the thing I need to inspire me to finally start MOCing?

At COP26 (UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties), key sustainability influencers and decision makers came together in Glasgow to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. We brought the LEGO building instructions to COP26 to remind leaders to place children at the forefront of discussions.

Coming up this June, we have the introduction of LEGO City Missions, where the build experience becomes part of an interactive storytelling experience: the instructions consist of a QR code and, on the flip side, an invitation to try out the other sets in the range. I have had a chance to preview these. I must admit, I really like the sets, but do worry about builds where connectivity is essential for the build experience[review coming soon]. At least with Super Mario, you can download a pdf of the building instructions.

I for one relish building LEGO sets using instructions. A good set is a kin to a good book, so an enjoyable build is literally a page-turner, and this swipe-right app stuff is too much of a distraction from the build. Building a LEGO set is a tactile experience, and having a physical instruction book is part of that.

Designer Program sets will feature digital building instructions provided by the LEGO Building Instructions app. Digital instructions not only reduce cost, they help us fulfil our Planet Promise by using less paper and saving on shipping weight, which in turn reduces emissions while delivering your set to you.

My 5 year old does not have a device with which to access building instructions. Nor did he at age 3, when he built his first Lego sets from directions. I do not want to mix screen time with LEGO. Certain things should remain analogue. Drawing, painting, lego building, reading and more are all better without screens, especially at young ages. If Lego insists on this path we will not be buying sets without manuals.

I enjoy going through my bin of instructions, rediscovering sets I forgot I owned, and rebuilding them, as do my kids and likely the eventual grandkids. This experience is a big part of our Lego journey and it goes away with digital instructions. There is no fun in painfully shifting through digital files where you would have to open each file to just to get a good visual of the creation to be.

This is a terrible idea. The lego mario app is the lowest quality app I have ever used. It constantly bugs, it absolutely destroys battery life while using it for instructions, and it rarely connects to the figures correctly. If that app is the example for why they should switch to that form of instructions, then I will not buy lego anymore. Also, if this will be a company wide thing, no one without a device will be able to buy and enjoy lego the way they can now.

What lego should do instead of thinking of stupid ideas is to combine multiple steps in one instructions page. Saves a lot of paper/ resources and makes for a smaller instruction book while not degrading any experiences. Many alternative brands already do this and there is no difficulty in following the instructions!

Shame on lego for providing less while still increasing their prices! The current system is fine with no problems. Having real instructions means you can collect more things and get better values for money. Removing instructions will prevent children, people without devices or limit people who are building away from home. This move will ruin the lego experience and only benefits lego company by cost cutting while keeping the price the same but more likely they will increase!

In addition to the free LEGO magazine, which deserves a spot in the Freebie Hall of Fame at this point, did you know you can now access most LEGO instructions online? There are tons of digital building guides offered by the official LEGO company in pdf form, accessible in your browser on your computer or phone!

Starting in 2021, LEGO released a new website offering of LEGO Classic Building Instructions. These are all free bundles with tons of building instructions per kit. Each kit usually has 4 to 26 guides that often have a similar themes. Click through on each of the following kits to see a full list of items and download the .pdfs or use the links below.

We LOVE LEGO and building all kinds of fun things without having a ton of specialty bricks and pieces! Try STEM challenges with your bricks, make fun DIY projects with your bricks, and even join us as we build a LEGO city this year! 006ab0faaa
