# Privacy Policy for Legit
**Last Updated:** February 19, 2026
The Legit extension is dedicated to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency. This policy explains exactly how we handle your data in compliance with the Chrome Web Store Developer Programme Policies.
### 1. Data Collection
Legit requires access to the active webpage's content to perform its core function (news legitimacy analysis).
* What we collect: We do not collect personal identifying information, browsing history, or background user data.
* User Inputs: The user must manually provide a Google Gemini API key to enable the analysis features.
### 2. Data Handling
The extension processes the text of the webpage you actively choose to analyze.
* When you click "Analyze", the webpage text and your provided Gemini API key are sent directly from your local browser to the official Google Gemini API to generate the legitimacy score and summary.
* None of this process is routed through any external developer servers.
### 3. Data Storage
Legit uses your browser's local storage.
* Your Gemini API key and basic extension preferences are stored strictly locally on your device.
* We do not store your API key, your analysis history, or any personal data on any external servers or databases. The developers have zero access to your stored data.
### 4. Data Sharing
We strictly do not share, sell, or distribute any user data.
* The only external communication is the direct API call made from your browser to Google's Gemini API for the sole purpose of providing the extension's functionality.
* No data is shared with third-party advertisers, trackers, or other entities.
