Legally Blonde The Musical

Scenic design and lighting by Ben Biddle for Avon HS Thespian Troupe #8320's 2022 performance.

The story of Elle Woods pursuing a law degree in the name of love is a carefree, over the top romp through a stylized imaginary world. The fast pace and chaotic plot skips around, echoing the kind of storytelling a child might pursue.

To emphasize these traits, the set design resembles an oversized Barbie Dream House with movable set pieces that transform into different settings as needed. This also mimics the way a child imagines the same toys for different purposes to suit their story.

The school typically used a single set deign with minimal stationary set pieces. This show attempts to be the complete opposite with no static pieces, where everything moves and changes. The script is also very fluid with several scene changes in the middle of songs.

Color Palette

The show is known for it overuse of pink. Anytime good things are happening to Elle, she should be surrounded by pink items such as Delta Nu, and her dorm room. Conflict or obstacles are indicated by the color blue, such as the evening sky at the outdoor restaurant where Warner breaks up with Elle or her blue power suit in the courtroom.

Hair Affair will be green, yellow and orange - neutral colors compared to the pink/blue conflict giving Elle a safe place to find her bearings. The colors also lean towards Paulette's love of Ireland and eclectic flair. The jail scene is red orange but slowly fades to a lighter shade as Elle breaks through to Brooke. Harvard is wood tones with accents of burgundy and purple.
