Who is jiyeon?
ย Greetings! My name is Jiyeon Lee, but you can also call me Leezie[lizi].
ย Currently, I am a first-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. I am profoundly grateful and feel fortunate to join SENsE Lab as a student researcher and to collaborate with fellow members of my Lab.ย My master's degree thesis at my previous lab (@ NEE Lab) focused on the development of closed-loop neurofeedback to modulate sleep quality and memory consolidation during sleep. This scholarly work is now in the preparatory stages for impending journal submission.
ย My research interests include tactile sensing and interacting with the environments, brain-computer interface, neuromodulation, and their applications in supporting cognitive functions.ย From my previous research, I have gained experiences in fabricating custom electrodes, collecting biosignals from pupil size recording (human), EEG, and ECoG (rat), performing rodent surgeries, developing both real-time and post-analysis algorithms, and even executing animal behavior experiments.These skills have been driven by an innate curiosity, which I believe will propel further advancements in knowledge and innovation in my future research endeavors.

My nickname, 'Leezi', is derived from my Korean name 'Lee, Jiyeon'. In Korea, when names are common, people often go by the first two syllables of their names. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in Young-in, on the outskirts of Seoul. At the age of 20, I moved back to Seoul and have resided here since. Despite a Seoulite, I am also a well-traveled person. Fueled by the spirit of an explorer, I have voyaged across 22 diverse countris-half of them solo since turning 20. Believing in the power of self-reliance and cultural understanding in travel, I have independently financed all of my journeys. I have even spent nearly a month in Paris, immersing myself in the unique culture of the country or city. I woke up in the morning, took a freshly baked baguette under my arm, and strolled along the Seine River. Then I sat in front of Notre-Dame Cathedral, sometimes drawing, and other times just blankly staring at my favorite artworks for over an hour. My every journey was an opportunitiy to assimilate and connect with globe.
Traveling the globe has enriched my appreciation for cultural and intellectual variety. It has provided me with a close-up view of the world, influencing many of my professional and personal beliefs. Navigating unexpected challenges in unknown places, either alone or with friends and family, has nurtured my ability to self-manage and adapt that will benefit me in the long run. These experiences have largely inspired and facilitated my ability to be flexible and affable!
Beyond the confines of academia, I also enjoy skiing and participating in extreme sports. You know what? I was a National Technical Official (NTO) at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, assisting judges in freestyle skiing (both mogul and aerial games) and participating in the construction of the courses by riding the courses. Additionally, my favorite and most frequent hobby is browsing Wikipedia to learn about topics that, while they might appear trivial at first glance, can contribute significantly to a wealth of knowledge. All these activities rejuvenate my mind and body, enabling me to maintain focus and commitment towards my professional and academic endeavors!
