Architecture As A Catalyst to Elevate Otak-otak Cultural Identity, Enhance Community Engagement and Economic Growth
This study explores the important role of architecture in elevating the cultural identity of Muar’s otak-otak as a significant local delicacy to national or global level, while addressing broader social and economic challenges. The proposed Tradition Culinary Cultural Experience Center will serve as a platform with sensory experience program, learning and training program and event space to preserve cultural heritage of culinary, foster community engagement and stimulate economic growth. Many local residents lack of awareness of Otak-otak’s cultural significance and its root despite it is being a well-known local delicacy in Muar district, Johor, Malaysia. The popularity among locals and tourists alike result the rise of numerous vendors and online sales may dilute its cultural value and authenticity. The convenience of online selling Otak-otak also might decline local and tourism appeal to visit Muar in the future. Hence, the study aims to demonstrate that the center can serve as a catalyst for education about Otak-otak’s cultural significance, enhance community participation across generations and ethnic groups even stimulate local economic development through maintain culinary tourism value in Muar.

In Muar, the journey of food is a journey of connection, every meal tells a story. Starting with fishermen’s catch, fresh catches flow from river to table, weaving together heritage, flavour and community. Through the crafting of Otak-otak, generations are invited to join their hands and young learning from old to preserve tradition with each wrap and grill.
It’s a celebration of Muar's tradition and spirit through the flow of locals and visitors engaging in the making, tasting and storytelling of Muar’s culinary culture. It’s a place where the marketplace hums with life, families gather and tourists become part of the story—food alive Muar from the innovative activity that brings people together. Here, food is more than a meal, it’s a bridge uniting culture, community and tradition even welcoming the future.
