1926 - 2026
Lee Street CRC began in 1926 when some families from nearby Grandville Avenue CRC saw the need to start a church with English services. The CRC was largely made up of Dutch immigrants in the mid 1800s, but by 1926 use of Dutch language had faded generation by generation.
Our church began as a neighborhood church. When the church bell rang at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p. m. on Sunday, doors opened and hundreds began walking to worship together. A small parking lot had space for a dozen cars.
Today, most people drive to worship and few know any Dutch, but God's word still goes out, God's people still respond with singing and look after one another. The sacraments are still offered. We are still confessing our need for forgiveness and being welcomed and blessed by God. In this way, nothing has changed in 100 years at Lee Street. And nothing has changed in 2000 years in the church of Jesus Christ as a whole.
This site contains some historical information about Lee Street CRC and about a book published for the occasion. Blessings as you explore.
