The Lee County Virginia Extension Master Gardeners in conjunction with the Lee County Extension Office who are offering the Grow Sustainab-LEE program, are pleased to announce their receipt of a grant in the amount of $20,636.41 from Grow Appalachia for the 2022 growing season. The Lee County Virginia Extension Master Gardeners, established in 2019, are a relatively new branch of the Virginia Master Gardener program. We currently offer programs such as Grow Sustainab-Lee and the Lee County Free Heirloom Seed Library. Our mission is to share knowledge and empower communities, which aligns perfectly with Grow Appalachia’s goals and mission. Some of the Extension Master gardeners core values include respecting the environment, each other, and those we serve. In addition, we strive to be wise stewards of our resources and to be held accountable to the organization, each other, and our communities. We are thrilled to offer this program to help combat food insecurity in our county, as well as to help people be better stewards of the land and available resources by learning to use organic gardening practices. The Grow Appalachia Garden Grant will support the establishment of home and community gardens to provide high-quality, organically grown local food for residents in Lee County, Virginia.
Grow Appalachia is a community garden-based food security program, headquartered at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. For the past 11 years, Grow Appalachia has been addressing food insecurity throughout central Appalachia through home and community garden initiatives, foodways, farming, and child nutrition programming. By meeting individuals and families where they live and addressing their specific needs, each household is provided with the tools, knowledge, and support to succeed in growing their own food. In the 2021 growing season, Grow Appalachia worked with over 1,000 families, totaling more than 3,300 gardeners, to grow 674,103 pounds of food. For the 2022 growing season, Grow Appalachia is working with 25 partner sites in five Appalachian states: West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, and Virginia, as well as much of eastern Kentucky. Grow Appalachia seeks to help as many Appalachian families grow as much of their own food as possible to increase food security on the individual, household, community, and regional level.
About Grow Appalachia:
Grow Appalachia, a Strategic Initiative of Berea College, began as a partnership in 2009 between Berea College and JP’s Peace, Love & Happiness Foundation to address food insecurity in Appalachia. For more than 10 years, Grow Appalachia has been working throughout central Appalachia with a vision of a vibrant regional food system where healthy food is accessible to all. Grow Appalachia partners with organizations, communities, and families in Appalachia to create healthy, resilient, and economically viable food systems. Since 2009, Grow Appalachia has partnered with more than 7,000 families and 23,000 gardeners, who’ve produced more than 6 million pounds of organic produce either in their backyards or at community gardens.
