James Turrell, Cockle Creek

Tasmanië - eliptical wide glass

The show’s highlights are three works from Turrell’s “Elliptical Wide Glass” series. The works, shallow holes in the wall filled with LED lights that seamlessly change colors, are classic Turrell. “Each is a unique composition, which over a two-and-a-half hour time period sweeps through thousands of different color themes,” Day noted.

Fiato d'artista, Piero Manzoni

It could be bought for 200 Lira per liter, the artist’s breath. It couldn’t be seen. But it was given a form in the inflated balloon which you now see slumped down in "Fiato d’artista". A hallmark of the work of Italian artist Piero Manzoni, who died young in 1963, at the age of twenty-nine, was that the subject matter of his art was invisible, and that it set off a charged dialectic between visibility and invisibility.

Marina Abramović - the artist is present

In 2010 at MoMA, Abramović engaged in an extended performance called, The Artist Is Present. The work was inspired by her belief that stretching the length of a performance beyond expectations serves to alter our perception of time and foster a deeper engagement in the experience. Seated silently at a wooden table across from an empty chair, she waited as people took turns sitting in the chair and locking eyes with her.

Lucio Fontana & Jef Verheyen

1962, België, documentaire

In december 1962 toonde het tv-programma Medium hoe Fontana een werk van Verheyen met een piek bewerkte. Toen de presentator vroeg, “Meneer Verheyen, hoe voelt gij u op het ogenblik dat uw vriend Fontana uw werk gaat onderwerpen aan een plechtige besnijdenis of perforatie?”, antwoordde die laatste kort en bondig: “Gelukkig.”
