The Italian harbor city of Venice is famous for its many canals and bridges. Built along the shores of the Adriatic Sea, the canals were used for protection, sheltering the city from the mainland, and transportation within the city. For the first time, research by the Italian Institute for Marine Research (Ismar-Cnr) and the Italian Navy has revealed what lies beneath the water's surface.

In Piazza Sant Oronzo, I find the first evidence of the Roman city. In fact the huge main square is named after a 1st Century bishop who was fed to the lions by Emperor Nero. The Roman amphitheatre, which takes up a large portion of the piazza, would have seated 20,000 spectators, entertained by such blood sports. Now it is hosting a life-sized nativity scene. The depth of the Roman remains beneath the level of the square is an indication of how history has been buried by modern living.

Back in 2001, the Faggiano family had been renting their house in the old town but wanted to convert it into a restaurant so that Mr Faggiano (a chef) and his sons (culinary students) could put their skills to good use. Little did they know when they began an investigation into some damp what they would uncover. 7 years and a lot of money later, the family opened the house as a museum. A maze of underground tunnels and chambers that date back to the 5th century BC, adorned with Templar symbols and littered with centuries of pottery, can now be explored by the public. Sadly, most of the objects discovered beneath the house are sitting in boxes in the Lecce Museum or Castle, waiting to be examined and catalogued by archaeologists.

Our initial findings indicate that, like their limp parchment cousins, semi-limp bindings played a significant role in bookbinding history. This role has been both underappreciated and underexamined in the scholarly literature, however, and much research remains to be done. Consequently, we encourage readers to take a look beneath the covers of the parchment bindings that line the shelves of their collections and start documenting what they see.7

These fishermen are the real keepers of the sea where life can be very hard, full of adventures, smells, nets and sharp ropes, colors, and wonderful creatures. Where the risk is always present. A life of hard work, which does not forget what lies beneath them, respecting it with conscious and targeted fishing, outside the logic of the multinationals.

The writing, which I do during the editing process, steers, corrects, and reacts to every cut. What we might have intended when we set out with our cameras, heads filled with possible themes and the best intentions, recedes as other forces, new realities, reveal themselves. What lies beneath bubbles to the surface.

Located in the heart of the city of Rome, the Colosseum enjoys the status of being the largest amphitheater in the world and is one of the seven wonders of the world. But beneath the wooden Colosseum floor that staged many gladiatorial events and animal hunts, there was a whole other world.

In order to transport the gladiators, animals, and scenery, both up to the large stage area and back down again, there were a number of wooden elevators hidden beneath the colossal amphitheater. It was an impressive feat of architecture to build the maze of tunnels, corridors, and elevators that were cleverly concealed beneath the Colosseum. 589ccfa754
