Vietnam visa exemption (also known as Vietnam visa waiver, or Vietnam visa free) means the case that a foreign national is allowed to enter Vietnam and stay in the country for a certain period of time without having to follow any Vietnam visa procedure as the Vietnam government has signed the bilateral/unilateral visa exemption agreement for his/her country.
In particular, ordinary passport holders of the following countries do not need a visa for a short visit in Vietnam:
1. Citizens from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand do not need entry visas if their stay in Vietnam is up to 30 days. Citizens of the Philippines do not need entry visas if their stay in Vietnam is up to 21 days.
2. In accordance with Resolution No. 44/NQ-CP of the Vietnam Government dated 07 March 2025, citizens of 12 countries consisting of Germany, France, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland enjoy visa exemption with a stay duration of 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type or entry purpose, on the basis of fulfilling the entry conditions as prescribed by the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Viet Nam. The unilateral visa exemption policy shall be effective from 15 March 2025 until 14 March 2028.
3. The visa exemption policy under the Tourism Stimulus Program shall be effective from 15 August 2025 until 14 August 2028.
There are 2 common types of visas:
● Tourist visa (DL): The tourist visa is issued to those traveling to Vietnam for tourism only, not for conducting business in the country.
● Business visa (LV1, LV2): to be granted to foreigners who work with Vietnam authorities/ parties.
There are 3 common ways to apply for a visa:
- E-visa: For both business purposes (working, attending summit/conference…) and tourist purposes, applicable to all nationalities, for a maximum stay of 90 days, single/multiple entries.
- Visa on arrival: For both business and tourist visas, with extended durations of stay. It has been exclusively applicable to air travelers. Upon arrival at any of Vietnam's international airports, individuals can obtain their visas directly at the airport.
- Vietnam Embassy or Consulate overseas: For both business and tourist visas, with extended durations of stay. Some travelers prefer the peace of mind that comes with having their visa in hand before departure, reducing any uncertainty about potential issues or rejections at the airport.
An electronic visa (E-visa) is one of the visa types issued to foreigners by the Vietnamese Immigration Department through an electronic system. It is valid for a maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry.
E-visa are available for both business travelers (working or attending conferences…) and tourists. Please select the business visa option when submitting your application, as it ensures that you are allowed to work, attend, and give presentations at the conference.
E-visa fee: 25 USD /single-entry electronic visa and 50 USD /multiple-entry electronic visa. The application will be processed in 3 working days.
We kindly recommend that you apply for an e-visa in advance. The e-visa is the most convenient option for international visitors and can be easily obtained online through the official website of the Vietnam Immigration Department. We encourage you to submit your application as early as possible to avoid any delays.
We also recommend that your accompanying person apply for an E-visa for their convenience.
